I have a 1986 Dodge Truck. The blower motor works if I hook it up directly to the battery, but if I try to turn it on with the switch it will blow a fuse. I cannot find a broken wire any where. What could be the problem?
Thanks.
Does the blower motor spin real easy by hand? Bearings or motor could still be bad. do you have the correct size fuse installed? 30 amp? You could have a bad switch on the dash or a problem at the resistor block on top the heater box. Also if you have a tilt steering column check the wiring at the ignition switch and see if it's melted.
Good, as long as all your blower speeds work correctly and they get very HOT...don't burn yourself! That needs to be cooled by the blower motor so reinstall it.
It also could be the switch. My superbee only had high, took the switch apart and the contacts where carboned up. Clean with sandpaper and life was good again. Just my two cents.

Chump asked but I didn't see an answer from you. Are you using a 30 amp fuse? That's what it calls for. If you're still blowing the fuse, you must have a short/ground somewhere that's causing you to draw too much current. I can't envision any other scenario if the blower is new and the switch and resistor are normal. Just make sure something isn't crossed wired, etc.
You might check out the control panel also. I know on my 86, the control panel is bad and I have to jump the connector to get the blower to come on. It doesn't blow a fuse, but that is another posibility to check out. On the back side of the panel, there are 3 connectors. A large connector with vacuum lines, a small 2 wire connector that runs the ac compressor (if your truck has ac) and a 3 wire connector that powers the blower motor. Just a suggestion.
If you are referring to the buttons on the control panel, I would pull the 3 wire plug off the back of the panel, use a jumper wire and jump the connector from the center wire to either of the side wires and see if you still blow a fuse.
It still blows a fuse. So, what does that mean? Is the switch still good?
