The radiator supports changed in 86.  The breakdown is as follows:
81-85
86-90
91-93
The difference is the headlight position, (unless its a diesel, then you have extra holes)

Whats giving yoh problems? Is it that the headlight bezels don't fit?

I put a 90 grille in my 82 RC by changing the radiator support and a few other items from the donor truck.

The metal part of the 90 should screw directly on to your 85.  The bezels should fit but the headlight will not center properly.
What do you mean the grille is too long?  The plastic part or the metal part?

I think he is trying to swap just the inner grille.  It all has to swap or none of it.  Note the differences in how the later grille meets the headlamp bezels and on the older style how the aluminum surround separates them:

here is a picture of a 90 core support, with an 85 grill.

Your setup, with the 90 grill, in the 85 core support, will be the opposite, the headlight will be to the upper left, and a gap on the lower right.  (I had to make the cuts on the bottom and side edge to fit the headlight door on).
