88 RC Idle all F#!#@%**^ UP!

 >:(  I have always dealt with old, computerless carb. trucks.  But to improve rock crawling capabilities, I bought an 88 TBI which ran fine at the time (of course).  Now, the idle gets screwed up, but not all the time.  It runs fine at first, but after a trip down the road it, wonít idle smooth.  It will almost stall out, then rev up, then almost stall, then rev up, and so on.  It also almost stalls out under fast or hard braking on the road as well. Also (and I know this is not good to do) if you floor it in park, it does not rev up smooth.  After about 3000 rpm, it begins to stumble.
I replaced the idle speed control motor on the throttle body.  I adjusted it as best I could & played around with it with no difference.  My factory manual does not address adjusting it (it mainly only covers carburetors).  
I was just wondering if anyone is able to shed some light on this situation before I dig in any deeper.  Thanks! ???

Before my wife and I got married she had a Neon that was a piece of ##*^%#@)*^%###$*%*^(%*^...  but I won't get into that.  Anyways, it acted like that and come to find out the head gasket was blown.  May not be it, but work checking the oil for water.  Something about the pressure in the higher rpms that made it act up and would open up the gasket more...  Can't remember all the details - like 8 years ago....

Hmmm....

I believe you may be on to something.  The temp guage has been reading high.  The radiator was crapped up & I replaced it.  That fixed it for a little while.  I will check into it.  It's not the kind of job I was looking for, but if it fixes it, great.  Thanks! :)

     one thing to try /// disconect the battery +or- rehook let it idle 10 min. or so.. .  have had to do mine several times..   the comp takes a set. the idle is to let the comp.. reset its self.   could be     quinn

Speed Sensor problem?

I would make a guess to check out the operation of the throttle position sensor and the speed/distance sensor and see what you come up with.


Description and Operation

The distance sensor is located in the transaxle extension housing and signals vehicle motion to the SMEC by generating eight pulses per axle shaft revolution. The SMEC uses this signal along with signals from the throttle position sensor to determine between a closed throttle deceleration and a normal idle condition, thereby allowing the SMEC to maintain desired control of the AIS motor.

If you have no time to answer the questions or try the advice then don't expect to fix it anytime soon!

Also, check for any Vacuum leaks.  spray some carb cleaner or wd 40 around the intake manifold and where the throttle body bolts to the intake.  Also check the vacuum hoses, and make sure the egr valve is not blocked open, letting exhaust into the manifold at idle.
Also, Keep us posted as to what you find out, because my 88 is doing the same thing..(mine has a leaking tbi gasket)
