86 W150 w/ 91-93 grill, problems going back to earlier grill
« on: February 19, 2013, 06:08:38 PM »
Hey guys,

When i got my project 86 w150 the previous owner had put the 91-93 grill on it. Due to it having some cracks and scratches in it i decided to replace it and take it back to the stock grill. I assembled the parts that are needed,  the center insert, two headlight bezels and the outer trim piece. However it doesnt look like the outer piece will mount up properly.

What modifications would need to be done to convert to the newer grill? Or in otherwords what to i need to now undo to get the stock 86 style grill back on there?

Is it a different core support? Did he cut off mounting tabs to make that new grill fit? Different fenders w diff mounting spots. What am i missing here?

Thanks guys

Yeah the 92-93 core supports are a good bit different. They made more room for the intercooler on the diesel.  ;)

Just go to somewhere like Certifit and get a aftermarket 91/93 grill. They are not that expensive. If you do go to the earlier grill Id be interested in the 91/93 headlight brackets..

Ok, so possibly a different core support and also different headlight brackets.  Does anyone know of a "how to" on the older to newer grill swap?  I searched but couldnt find anything.  If I could see something like that, I could just reverse the steps and see exactly what is needed.

Ok Guys,

After looking at what is on the truck now I believe it to be the original core support.  You can see where the light mounting area was cut slightly and the headlights moved up.  I will need to move them down slightly and I would guess that is the difference, in how the grill itself mounts.
Also while browsing around I located this article

I will keep you all posted on what I find

If the upper section of the recessed bucket holes have been cut then yes its the originsl core.  You will need to unbolt the brackets that the buckets are mounted in. Go to the auto parts store and get 4 new adjuster screws to relocated the buckets into the proper location, get the proper grill frame, grill and headlight buckets.
Heres a pic of the 91/93 brackets  that I adapted to my 81 core.  These brackets are not used on the 80s grills..
That article is the hard way to do the conversion.
