79 TD 360 Hard start
« on: September 8, 2012, 09:56:45 PM »
Got a 79 TD 360 that is hard to start. When cold I have to crank it about three times for about 15-29 seconds before it starts. I've got a edelbrock 650 which I took off my 318. The 360 was hard to start before I put the new Carb and intake on. I'm thinking its a distributor problem. I've adjusted the timing and checked the air gap. Once the truck is warmed up it will start back up, but if it sits for about five minutes even warm its hard to start again. Any ideas?

What makes you think it is a distributor problem?

Perhaps you arent telling us everything, so explain your logic.

The reason I think it could be a distributor problem is because the truck was hard to start before I changed out the Carb and intake. The new intake and Carb were on my other ram charger which was a 318. That one started up right away. I thought when I switched over that it would fix the problem but it didn't. The only thing I didn't change out was the distributor.

You could replace it (strongly strongly doubt but possible)

Or could work on the rest of the fuel system checks (hasnt been replaced yet)

Also can measure radiator, intake, and carb temperatures.

I also doubt the distributor would need to be replaced. How's the engine run overall? Knowing that would help narrow it down.

Have you checked the choke adjustment on either carb?

Been told that it could be some of the fuel in the bowl could be evaporating and that I should put a spacer between the Carb and manifold. Started right up this morning with one pump of the gas and one turn of the key.
