225 to 318 Swap.
« on: May 24, 2011, 03:34:27 PM »
Hey Everyone,  I need some info on a project i am working on.    Finally, I'm yanking my 1983 Dodge 4x4's 225 and dropping in a 318.    I am aware that stuff will need to be changed,  like engine mounts, radiator and hoses,   but what else?   Are the bell housings compatible? I have budgeted for a bellhousing for a 318 4 speed truck,  but if i don't need to change it I wont.  Any other things i may have missed?   Let me know if anyone has done this swap before and what little things needed to change that were first not apparent.
Thanks!

I just put a 74 Dart 318 in my 84 RC, and while the 74 was easier to get in than the 84 was to get out, I became aware of a few things like 'BRACKETS'. Stuff like your power steering and alternator, the spacer block on your fan, things like that in your excitement at the prospect of V8 power might have overlooked 'or not' My swap meant I couldn't use my AC compressor, at least untill I find different brackets, "which I'm looking for" and the alternator fan belts had to be routed differently, crank to alt. and that leaves precious little space next to the edge of the water pump.

I think you'll need a longer throttle cable as well.
Grab a ratchet and put the top down!

Thanks guys.    The Z-bracket is something I wold never have thought of.   as for the brackets for alt and ps pump and everything,  those are still on the 318.  I have no use for AC here,  just open windows.

Ok...I was just going from experience. When I put a clifford setup on my /6 the cable was about 1-1/2" too short. I never did a 6 to 8 swap though so I stand corrected.

The rubber mount between the frame and motor brackets are the same. You can try the current rad to see if it keeps it cool enough. Dont forget you need a Truck pan for the motor you install. As stated the bell and a v8 throttle cable but you could probably make the slant work.
