1998 Dodge Durango won't start!?
« on: December 15, 2011, 12:02:55 PM »
Hey guys/gals,

I recently bought a 98 dodge durango with a 5.2 and found out the water pump failed so I WAS going to replace that down at my fire dept(more tools and indoors is nice for working on vehicles)...But when i went to start the durango it would crank but NOT turn over.

Here's what I checked:
-Battery, good.
-spark at plugs, there's spark but may be weak.
-fuel in the lines, yes. unsure of pressure though.
-fuel pump sounds when key is turned.

So far I've been told it could be: the Coil, fuel pressure regulator, fuel relay, fuel pump

If anybody has any ideas or solutions to what the problem could be please let me know. You opinions and inputs are greatly appreciated. thank you!

Will it start with the pedal depressed? Do an idle relearn then Check the hall effect sensor on the back of the motor

If the fuel pump whirs when you turn the key its probably good. The idea here seems to be getting the injectors to spray I think crank sensor have you pulled the distributor cap off?

you need a code reader / it could be either the Dist pickup or the crank sensor

I have tried the pedal depressed and still nothing.

I was told a similar story about a crankshaft sensor, havent had time to check or replace that yet. I just got it last night and it was raining outside and wasn't up for going thru all that. So I will most likely just replace the crankshaft sensor because it's cheap.

now, I forgot to mention that my Interstate battery is approx 7-8yrs old. it's a black top and I believe all Interstate batteries are bright green now, yes? ...Could I just have a bad battery too being that its old and might not hold a charge as well anymore???

So I tried the turning the key 3 times trick to pressurize the fuel lines....and it started but died quickly. Tried this twice.

Fuel pump? or could it be as simple as a clogged fuel filter??
