1985 RC Prospector 4x4 - Wiring.......
« on: September 19, 2011, 08:49:34 AM »
So after taking a lot of advice I hunted down all my grounds under the hood and yes they needed some attention. I also removed the back bumper and found that someone tried to hook up a trailer light connection. WTH......what a mess. Corrected the mess and fixed all connections and now I have tail, turn, and back up lights. I then took out the radio and again. WTH.....I had wires that looked melted. So I have now ordered a wiring harness for the the radio. I still do not have dash lights. I removed the dash and the gauges to look behind for more of a mess. Nothing found. Put new lights into the gauges and check connections and looked for bad wiring. Still hunting for the smoking gun on this one. Also, the RC starts right up first turn of the key. Nice!

For dash lights, did you check the headlight switch?  Could be the dimmer portion has gone bad.

Not sure outside of pulling the switch an visually checking the resistor.  There might be a wiring diagram in the 'Photos and PDFS' section that you could use to see which terminals to measure resistance across.

It could be related to your messed up radio wires, The dash-lights in my Isuzu Rodeo went out when I installed my radio, I know somewhere the wrong wires crossed and the dash lights went out. Its a long shot but if your radio wires were "melted" it could have been drawing power from your dash. Although its probably totally unrelated.

The only related wire (unless a previous did a real hack job under the dash) should the the illumination wire that dims the lighting on the radio (and on some models lights up the buttons) when the parking/head lights are turned on.
When I've had dash light problems in the past on relatively unmolested wiring, it's been due to the dimmer portion of the headlight switch being bad.

Ya i wasn't sure if it was connected to the dimmer; that dimmer wire is what crossed in my Isuzu, But like i said its a long shot but that can be a cause of lack of dash lights. In my 75RC I have no dash lights but speedo and its partly because so many people had hacked into the wiring and partly shorts/burnt bulbs.

So I pulled the headlight switch out and found that it was rusted and totaly trashed. Put in a new one and I now have dash lights and no blown fuses.
