1972 to 1993 dodge truck fuse boxes
« on: October 6, 2010, 06:14:28 AM »
below is an email l sent to a member requesting "just" the fuse box from the cab wiring / he,s the third one to ask / l dont understand were people got the info that the fuse box just "POPS" right out of the truck and plugs back in like a light bulb / just because it pops [falls out] of its dash holder and hangs down does not mean it magically unplugs

" howdy @#$%^ / heres the scoop and l,m also gonna post this on RCC / the under dash fuse box is ABSOLUTLY NOT REMOVABLE from the rest of the CAB wiring harness on ANY 1972 to 1993 dodge truck / you either hafta fix what you have or pony up the money to buy a COMPLETE good used cab wiring harness / l,m not mad at you by any means and l hope your not mad at me / but your like the Third person to want just the fuse box / they just didnt understand that its NOT removable without cutting [ruining] the rest of the cab harness / a good electrical wizard could probly wire one in in a day or so but the electrical integrity of it is substandard at best and a fire hazzard at worst / plus the electrical nightmare of loose connections of the 60 plus wires that go to the fuse box / let me know what you wanna do about the wiring

is there anyway to write this info up and put it in the F@Q section

Agreed, swapping a fuse box is a huge job and may not always work out 100% depending on the options on the donor and the truck being fixed.  I swapped a '83 model blade style fuse box into my '74 W100 when it's fuse box melted down due to the blower fan fuse holder overheating.  It was a royal pain in the butt to swap and required a lot of splicing.  Even worse was the fact that the later box had more circuits and different ones in common to a single fuse so it was a pain to figure out.  It is possible to swap one, but I would not want to lay under the dash of a '80s truck for a day soldering all those wires.  The '74 was at least on top and I could sit comfortably and do it, lol.

Wow,and I thought it was just me. The wiring down there is a "snake pit"!  I just fix what I find that is wrong and pray. I tried to fix my volt meter and gave up. I have an aftermarket volt meter attached to the bottom of my dash. (Also have a fire extinguisher plus a small wrench to un-hook the Battery cables. Can't be too careful, dontcha know.

I don't know about the 80's but I do know that each fuse clip with wire will unplug from the fuse box on the 70's. Mine was melted and I replace it with a new NOS one. You have to squeeze the clips together and push them through from the front out the back and they will push right back into and lock in the new box.. No cutting and soldering at all unless you have some bad wires to replace..

Notice the missing fuse clips in the new one?

Been here and done that. The older fuse blocks like the picture shows do not come with all the clips and you have to reuse the existing clips that are attached to the dash wires. Push in and out. On the back are bus bars that connect several fuses together for power in, these usualy have the regular 1/4" or 5/16" spade terminals. The newer fuse blocks are not even blocks at all but just plastic shrouds that the wires snap in to. The wires actually have a special wire terminal that accommodates the flat lug of a blade type fuse. this is really an area that is not designed for the faint of heart. I have a couple of new fuse boxes and shrouds here at the house that I use for research. The fuse clips for the old style boxes are near non-existent by themselves although this era block may use a clip the same as a GM early block but I haven't had time to check. Dodge Muscle car repro shops may have some clips available.
If you have no time to answer the questions or try the advice then don't expect to fix it anytime soon!

I have no experience with 80's-90's models but on the 78-79 Lil Red's I deal with you can change one out pretty easy and you get to work from the top not under the dash. And the fuse panels are fairly cheap http://www.dodgeconnection.com/catalog/item/2862767/5854900.htm

on the 1981-ups when they go bad they take out the plastic and all the wires associated with that circuit / so just replacing the plastic wont do / you would need the WHOLE cab wiring harness  / but more than some people think it just unsnaps from the harness
