'93 Ramcharger Instrument panel.
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:18:20 AM »
I just recently replaced the flasher for my turn signals. Worked totally fine until today. When I went out this morning and turned the lights on, both turn indicators lit up, the brights indicator lit up (only when just the parking lights are on) and all the gauges freaked out and went to either extreme. When I turn off the parking lights/headlights however, the gauges return to normal. Any ideas?

check all the bulbs, sounds like a turnsignal/parking light bulb might have a short in it. also check the trailer wiring, if you have one.

X2 on checking trailer wiring if you have it.  BTW, what made you replace the flasher in the first place?

Was simply driving and the flasher just went out, old I guess.
I did some poking around and checked the ground on the radiator core support, the wire is a bit long so I shortened it and reattached it. The problem has not reappeared, but I will keep you updated.

Why shorten the ground wire?

Also could be the turn signal cancel mechanisism in the steering column to, dit the same thing on my 85 RC. There was a short in it that took out the flasher and put in a new one gages peggeg an all the lights came on for the dash. Just a thought.

There was a lot of slack in the wire. I probably could have just fastened it tighter, but it was just as easy to take a little slack out, looks cleaner that way.

FYI, the 93 has a whole different setup, much more durable.

That cloud do, I did not realize they still used separate grounds for the front turn signals still in 93. That will have the same effect as some bad bulbs, where the ground wire corrodes/ breaks, or where one of the filaments breaks, and touches the other.  Thanks for updating us, this way we can all learn more.
