I Want To Build A 4X4 Dodge Van
« on: January 17, 2012, 07:59:10 PM »
Hey , I have been trying to gather up parts to build a 4X4 Dodge Van . I want to know if anybody knows what they used for front leafs . What did they come out of ??? , how long , what arch , etc .
I have the dana 60 out of a 97 Ford one ton , Several rear dana 60's . Transmission and transfer case out of a 1998 Dodge 4x4 pickup . The rear lift doesn't bother me , I'm gonna start with a shackle flip . What ever it takes to level it up with the front . I think the steering was also off a ford truck , like I said , I think . Crossover steering .
What am I missing ??? ??? ??? ???

Just type in "Dodge van 4x4 " in a search and there are companys that do this that could tell you parts needed and what to get them from .

Thats a nice van , nice height and the right look . What is on it for tires , 33's ?   . Thats all I want , 33's or maybe 35's , It also has to go on the highway too .  Back when they were making the dodge 4x4 vans and selling them , there were several different companys at it . While most were using leaf springs up front , one company used coils for the factory look . Coils limited the height they could go . Lots of Ford and Chubby vans are still being made by companys into 4X4's , but the Dodge one's stopped a long time ago . I still haven't bought a body to convert yet , but I'm looking and gathering parts . I want a 2002 or 03 , something with air . Not sure if I want a regular length van or the extended , I have a extended camper dodge van  here now that I could scrap for a newer project . Put the roof and camper gear into the newer one , but I think its to long for going into the woods four wheeling I think your is the right size .

Problem is newer Dodge vans are uni-body so no frame to convert .

Only thing that blue van needs is the running boards removed. Looks good though. I have a 2002 1500 that I only use in the summer. Interesting project, I hope you can find what you need.

That would be anything newer then the early 70's.

Those running boards don't suit the van , do they . I have a cheap van found , 2003 . I just have to go get it , I'm thinking about using Jungle's kit for the front . I might start a hold new business for him , 4X4 vans . I also found a pop up camper that has me thinking , its made like the old wildernest camper . I think that would be better than the raised camper roof that I already have , definitely different . I did see a old van with one in pictures once , somewhere . All I need now is warm weather , we still have at least two months of winter weather left yet . The two worst one's . I just bought a loaded 1998 Durango to scrap too , Should be lots of goodies on that , that I can use also .

The three point conversion is much easier, faster and cheaper than leaf spgs plus you get the ride quality of coil spgs. Think Ford Model A type triangular type suspension w a panhard rod, or track rod in latespeak. Its that simple.  The Van Charger conversion as I recall had the 3 point and when I looked at it I was amazed to see an upside down trailer coupler hanging on a 2 inch hitch ball bolted to a plate that was welded or bolted btwn the frame rails. There must be a photo somewhere.
That was 78 or so when they were sold new at my local dodge dealer.
Leaf spgs give a horrible ride and take up a lot of room which is tight towards the front, so the springs have to be short, and that makes it worse. Frame twist is much less too and off road traction is better too.

a good friend of mine had an early-mid '70's GMC 4x4 van.  it was really cool and you don't see many 4wd vans.  i've considered a project like this too before but i would want to run at least 35's.  the problem with most vans is the front fender/door area and tire clearance.  there just isn't much you can do without getting surgical with sheetmetal.  unless you want to run a stupid amount of lift.  i also think a leaf spring front end would be the way to go but i'm biased - i like leaf springs.

good luck with it, and post lots of pics!  {yes}  {popcorn}

I scrapped a 1980 Dodge 4x4 van years back that had 35 inch tires , I bought it off a guy that said he put a 4 inch lift in it . It cleared the sheet metal no problem and wasnt to high . I wish I asked him what he bought the lift kit for , I think the front leafs were for a jeep cherokee , but dont quote me on that . That one was rusted out and  met an untimely death , the parts were around until I moved .  It rode and handled good , for what it was .

MoparMuscle1 , I'm bored because of the cold weather and I dont have a garage to work in , Have lots of work my 77 D100 and 79 RC to do though . Its just my shyt life . Searching the net for theses van parts have made me want to do a 4x4 van in the future . lol I like it .  ;D

you need a yeti blood transfusion so you can get out there and get busy!  ;D
should be a good week for weather.  ;)

E Transfusions wont change my blood disorder . It would take experimental bone marrow transfusion and then its a low percentage that it would work and health insurance wont even talk about it .
I'm not trying for sympathy , just stating the facts guys I Try not to even talk about it . It's to depressing .
ANY WAY the weather for cast is showing high 50's to low 60's all week here so I'll get my but to work now lol

My garage days might be over for the rest of this year , i started to stuff my eve's in the garage with insulation a couple of weeks ago and had a fall . Ten foot ladder plus a concrete foor , one leg no longer works and the Dr. thinks it could be 9 to 12 weeks if I'm lucky . I only have at least 2 more weeks in the garden to clean up before the snow comes , things are gonna be rough for a while .

The pathfinder kit doesn't cover the newer 4x4 Dodge van , I want the newer look . Just bought another 4x4 dodge van for parts , rust bucket . I bought it without looking at it and I don't see anyway to get it home before spring . Its about 2 hours away and a towing company will want around $1000. plus to go get it .

Here are some more pic's of dodge 4x4 Vans to get you going  ;D
