So how long does anti freeze last?
« on: January 5, 2010, 07:35:13 PM »
OK I blew out the heater core in the Durango today.

I pulled the hoses off the pump and at the intake. stuck one end in a bucket and shot 40lbs of air trough, poured water in it and shot that trough. I did that 3 times with 1 shot the other direction in between.

My question is how long does it take for antifreeze to gel? I got BB size wades of gel out of the heater core.  :o

Oh and the heater works better. I'm still thinking it's a little cooler than it should be but hey at least it gets warm now.  ;D

The basic glycol can last so long that they recycle it and make more antifreeze out of it.

I am assuming the gel is silicate? Silicate falls out of the antifreeze over time, depending on many factors. In big trucks, they may run the same antifreeze for the life of the truck, but add more silicate additive as needed.

Check to make sure you are using the proper antifreeze. I have seen red, orange, blue, yellow, green, and pink. It is not just a color, it is a composition blended for certain engines. Even amongst antifreeze of the same color, you gotta watch out. For example, cummins and most other non sleeved diesels use a specific antifreeze, NOT the stuff you put in your car, because that stuff is loaded with silicates.
Avoid replacing any part that you have not proven to be faulty through extensive testing.

LOL........  ;D

This thing is running very cool so the rad isn't bad but there was a bunch of silicate in the heater core.  ;)
