5.9 magnum vs 5.2 magnum
« on: February 22, 2005, 06:04:45 PM »
I got to thinking today about what I'm looking for in a truck I've got everything except the engine down I originally wanted to go with a 5.2 just to maybe get some better gas mileage but after thinking about it I like some more power so my question Is it worth the mileage trade off for the power to go 5.9 or are they so close it really don't matter which one I get?

I thought, why not have people calll me by my first name?

Looking at someone elses Mopars at a car show it like having a hot female friend, you might appreciate and know quite a bit about them, but at the end of the day you're not the one that's putting them through their paces.

I have a 92 with the 5.2 and a 93 with the 5.9. Gas mileage between the 2 is to close to even make a difference. Both good engines but I would go with the extra torque you get withe the 360.

i have a 94 with a 5.9 and 14.5 mpg is pretty much the best i can do for mileage.  I've test driven 5.2 5 speeds and thier almost as powerful as a 5.9 auto. Not quite as powerful.  One person i knew claimed he could get around 20 mpg out of his 5.2 5 speed.  5.2 auto will probably get about 17 mpg.  5.9 5 speeds didn't come in half tons.

That 30 ft lbs is very noticable when your driving the truck down the highway in OD.  The 5.2 can barely hold its speed without kicking out of OD.  Its not about the numbers its about the torque curve and the 5.9 has a better curve.

I had a 99 4x4 318 and I have a 2000 4x4 360.  The difference in mileage is too close to count.

Amen.  There is a lot more power down low and is especially noticible  around town in the heaver vehicles.   e.g Ramchargers.

My 2wd 5.2 Mag that burned a quart of oil every 1000miles got 15/18MPG.  My 5.9 in the same RC does about 13/17MPG.  Thats with 3.55's, OD, and stockish tires.

Verdict is DEFINITELY worth the upgrade.  But definitely slightly less MPG.  But its cold outside and I haven't exactly babied it around town.

Yeah it would be worth it but as was stated earlier I can't get with a manual with a 5.9 in a 1/2 ton and all the 3/4 tons around here have cummins........

The reason your 5.2 used so much oil is because the Plenum gasket was bad.  Its common for both 5.2 and 5.9's to do that.  It can also cause them to get worse gas mileage and to ping.  I've known of a 5.9 that used 1 qt every 400-500 miles because of the plenum gasket.

Plenum gaskets are notorious for failing on Magnums. 2 ways to fix - billet aluminum plate from Hughes or APS, which is the cheapest way to go. You can also swap out the intake for an M1. I did that to my 92 318. No more plenum gasket and more power. Lose a little down low but the top end rush is very noticeable.

I like the 318, it is a little peakier and revs quicker than the 360. Different mods work better on it than the 360. That being said when it come time to replace my tired block I will snatch up a 360 if I can find a good deal on it.
