5.7L Hemi into Pre-93 Ram/Ramcharger
« on: October 26, 2009, 12:26:15 PM »
There is a guy on a Dakota forum that has a 5.7L Hemi for sale near me w/ a bent rod for cheap.  I'm thinking about picking it up and rebuilding it for my 84.

Has anyone done this swap or know what all I would need?  Will a 727 bolt up to the 5.7L?

The 727 will bolt up, that much I know, but as far as flywheel/starter requirements I can't say, since I've never done it. Didn't the guys at Brutal Off Road do this swap for one of their customers?  I saw some pics of a 5.7'd R/C in one of Brad's threads.  Mixed in with his build if I remember right.

The actual owner came on and listed it in the classifieds for around $9000

Thanks for that link.  The guy said he can't produce pictures and he said someone gave him the motor so I'm not gonna pick it up.   Maybe after the 318 gives up the ghost a few years down the road I'll attempt the swap.  Thanks for all the help guys.

My buddy is putting a 5.7 Hemi in his 63 Dodge Dart. He's also spending a LOT of $$$$$. He bought the RMS complete coil over front suspension, cut out the tranny hump and installed a truck tranny. He used the Jeep SRT exhaust manifolds. He was able to buy the computer and wiring harness. It's coming together and should be ready for next spring.

Will be expensive what ever way you go.  A 5.7 Hemi has no provision for a distributor.  You can buy a 'retro'kit that adds a new front timing cover and adds a distributor. $$$$  There is an ignition kit available called the "hemi six" that makes the OEM ignition setup work.  But it is $600.
What about fuel?  You can do a retro type manifold and put a carb on.  Expect to pay a premium for the manifold.  To get the OEM fuel injection working you have to go with a controller like a FAST or you can even do a MegaSquirt if you are good with electronics.
What you FEEL is spurious and ultimately meaningless.
What you THINK is foundational to who you are.

it's a spendy conversion but it can certainly be done - have a gander here at Shop Hemi:  http://www.shophemi.com/p-203-new-hemi-chipkillr.aspx

honestly, if I were going to go 'there' I'd do a 408 stroker.  Lots simpler and it all bolts in.  Just a thought...?
