Obama is eyeing more lands to be protected.  http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/02/18/obama-eyeing-millions-wild-acres-national-monuments/As Utahn, and an avid user of two of the area on the list, this disturbs me. One, the San Rafeal Swell, has been a battle ground for years. All of the squabbling over the area over the last few years has actually turned out pretty good, considering the alternatives. They should keep doing what they are doing there. The Swell is a nice place to go where you can just camp, explore (via on foot, bike, atv or 4wd) and enjoy yourself. Official designation will reduce/eliminate the last three and turn camping into crappy camping with pay sites and neighbors 20 ft away (like Moab has become). The other, Cedar Mesa (an area of probably the greatest concentration of Anasazi ruins and artifacts in the southwwest), I don’t have too much concern of further “theoretical” protection (depending on the borders) as there isn’t a lot of off road opportunities, but I think that an official designation will just draw more attention and visitors. More visitors and more “official protection” is bad and will just take away from the whole experience and make it more sterile, like Mesa Verde. |
