Hey guys i love the project. My rc is going to be a similar  set up. I eas wondering if i could bug you guys for mounting positions on your rear shackle hangers. Im runnong the same leaf springs also. So im trying to get the shackle angle correct. Super appreciated!

    well, there isn't a definitive answer on where to place the shackle mounts to the frame, and that's because it all really boils down to the angle with full weight on the wheels.  We actually had to modify Homer's rear mounts to move the bushing placement rearwards about 1.5 inches because our first wag was off.  So, my best advice is to get all the hardware, mount the front, tack weld the rear shackle mount to the frame in the best guess location, and then put all the weight you can determine will ultimately be on the truck in the back end, set it on the ground, and with all that weight on it then move the mount forward or rearward to get the shackle angle at about a 30* angle.

    hope that helps?

    i figured it would be a pain to measure right after i wrote it. i saw that the eye to eye measurement was about 56. in thinking that since i have a old pop top and that i dont think im going to be hauling as much in my rc i think im going to shoot for about 54.5 - 55. see how that looks.

     by the way great truck amazing build! im hoping to get to that point eventually!

    Hey guys quick question. Did you guys end up using the Skyjacker 4 inch lift lift leaf springs for the front? If so can I get a part number for that? Please and thank you. I used the stock leaves that jungle suggested for up front and with the Procomp Springs in the rear my RC is stink bugging pretty bad. I want to try and level it out a bit more. LOL..

    Hi everyone

    It has been awhile and I have been driving my truck everyday to work, cruising 400 miles to my brothers house down in New Mexico, driving it to MOAB and wheeling it and driving it back.  The 35 spline outers and Yukon Hardcore hubs are performing really well! So far I have put 16,200 miles on it since completing the build.

    I do have a driveline vibration on the freeway between 60 and 70 mph - once I am at 75+ it is gone.  Sam and I decided to lower the truck 3 - 4 inches.  I picked up some standard height 56 inch chevy springs for the rear and we will lower the front bringing the truck down 3ish inches.  I think it will be more stable as well with the center of gravity lowered.  Also, we decided to move the PSC ram from the kingpin and attach it to the steering tie rod.

    Sam is also going to make me a rear tire swing away and get that 36" Mickey out of the truck!

    While the truck is down I am going to take the front and rear axles to "Rock Monkey 4x4" and change the gearing from 4.56 to Spicer 5.86's.  I am running a 518RH transmission which has overdrive and lockup and it can really use the higher RPMs when the transmission is locked up and traveling 80MPH on the freeway.  Also I will replace the ARB front locker with a full time Yukon Grizzly Locker.  Rationale here is I am tired of cycling it on and off while wheeling and when it is all I have is 3x4 running.  Plus, I have seen to many folks losoe their locker when the air line breaks or compressor fails; however, main reason is I just want it to be in 4x4 when ever I lock the hubs and engage the T-case. I love the full time detroit locker in the rear!

    I hope to start these upgrades this weekend so I will be posting pics and video.

    What kind of rpms do you expect with new gearing? You don't want to keep a 408 wound up too much long term, the bearings get a lot of work with that 4" stroke. Side loads on the cup walls too.

    according to the calculator, with the 5.86s his engine will be turning 2270 rpms at 60 mph, 2650 at 70 mph, and just over 3000 at 80.  We would have gone with 5.38's but they aren't available for a D70 - and the only other option was 5.13s, which are a bit too low.  Plus going with the 5.86s also gives him the option to go to a taller tire  8)

    Hi Dave - great points, especially about the bearings.  I used my GPS to jot down my highway cruising speed / RPM with my current 4.56 gears:

    Gear                 MPH    RPM
    3                       54      2000
    3                       63      2200
    3                       66      2300
    4                       71      2550
    4 w/ Lockup       71      2200
    4 w/ Lockup       75      2300

    I am looking for more RPM at the higher speeds so the truck wont bog down when the freeway hits those long slight grades between Colorado Springs and Denver or when we are driving to the trails out west.  I drive my RC everyday to work and I only hit 40 - 45 MPH.  When I take the kiddo to school I will cruise at 65 MPH for 10 miles.  Only time I will do sustained 75/80 MPH is on the occasional trip to Denver or off road trip.  Good news is Rock Monkey 4x4 will have them in this week and I will post what the real world difference is between the 4.56 and 5.86 gears are.

    In the post above - the reason my speeds are not even numbers is because my speedometer is only accurate to 55 mph and reads fast over 55.  Here is the comparison of speedometer vs GPS:

    RC MPH                   GPS Speed      RPM
    55                      =      54              2000
    60                      =      58
    65                      =      63              2200
    70                      =      66              2300
    75 OD                 =      71              2550
    75 OD w/ lockup  =      71              2200
    80 OD w/ lockup  =      75              2300

    Those numbers are about what my truck turns on 33s and 4.56s with my nv4500. Putting 35s on this year finally so it'll drop the rpm some.
    I would hope that's okay. I just remember mine and my old friend  Scott had a 70 Dart with a 408. First build was the cheap Mopar cast crank and Manley rods with KB pistons. It was heavy and destroyed the bearings in 20k.
    Next build was with a Scat forged crank, light weight rods and pistons and it's made it 25k so far. Some 1/4 passes mixed in but mostly DD miles. I doubt Homer hammers this one like Scott does. My 72 Sebring was the cast crank route and was okay after 15k when I sold  it.  I've read a lot of other's issues too so just keep it in mind. I doubt you'll have any issues. I'm just anal about stuff.

    My motor has quality components with an internally balanced crank.  I don't race it - although I do get up to the legal speed limit quickly.  One time I took off on the green light I had a cop race up and slide in behind me and follow me a couple of lights.  Never broke traction and I stopped accelerating right at the limit!  : )

    So I ran the gear calculator using over drive gear ratio of .69, and rear gears of 5.86:
    MPH     RPM       With Lock up engaged
    54       2037
    63       2377
    66       2490       2190

    What's in there now? 4.56 or 4.88? Can't remember. Taller rubber going in too? 38s maybe?

    Hi Dave,

    Got 4.56 gears with 36" Mickey Thompsons.  I might upgrade to the Mickey Thompson 38's or 40's once I wear out the 36's.

    First up is the grizzly in the front with new gears.  Then relocate the PSC Ram from the king pin to the tie rod. Then Sam is making an external bumper tire carrier to free up my rear hatch area.  Then We will do a suspension drop.  I am finishing up my half doors for the summer as well.

    5.86 gears and Grizzly locker are in - truck is much happier ;D  (Pics coming soon)

    Sam is fabricating up the tire carrier for the rear bumper - this will get the tire, two gas cans, two water cans and the highlift jack outta my rear hatch area.  He will post some pics as he fabricates it.

     - so Homer wanted to get a bunch of his cargo 'outside' the truck, so I'm fabbin' him a big beefy spare tire carrier, which will also carry his high-lift and some fuel containers.  Started with a RuffStuff spindle kit for the pivot, and using 2" square tube for the main swing arm and support.  A 9/16 hitch pin both keeps it all closed, and open when loading gear etc.  I can hang on the middle of the extended arm and all that happens is the suspension compresses just a little.  Diggin' how it's coming together :)

    When swung out you can use that carrier as a lever arm to flip the ramcharger back over onto its wheels!  Bonus!

    Since you have it mounted to the bumper (and therefore the frame) and the body, I take you do not think the body movement on the rubber bushings will not be an issue?  {noclue}

    nope - the bumper and body are pretty solidly mounted to the frame - not much flex in any of it

    Tire carrier works like a charm - it is really nice having the hatch area open and available.  Now I can put my daughter and sons shotguns, 500+ shotshells, and other gear in there when we go to the gun club ; )

    I have 50 miles on the new 5.86 gears and grizzly locker - gotta say I LOVE IT!   ;D

    Truck feels soooo much lighter, he just gets up and goes.  I have a new 43 tooth speedo gear to put in to bring the speedometer back down to normal.  Right now I use the GPS for the speedometer.

    Once I can get on the freeway I will post the RPMs for each gear but right now it humms along in 3rd gear at 45 mph / 2200 rpm then I go into 4th gear at 45 mph and it drops to 1800 RPM.  cruisen at 65 in 4th gear was 2400 RPM.  With lockup it should cruise at 75 around 2500 RPM.   Overall I am really happy with the change in gears. l
