i finally got her 2 weeks ago. would you believe $2200?  Shocked i added the wheels and tires but the truck is otherwise as i bought it, for now. Grin

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3008885

all of the mods i had been putting off on my 84 will go into this baby. the efi magnum 360, NV4500, the NP208 and front axle out of the 84 for starters. the 84 is just too far gone with rust for me to mess with. i really wanted a topless truck anyway. the 208 will do for now. that full time 4x4 really hurts the mileage. my 84 got 11mpg on the hwy, this sucker gets 7-8mpg.

more lift, different t-case and dana 60's front and rear will come later. thinking about a 203/205 or 203/dana 300 doubler for the t-case. i will take some work to make the 203 fit the NV4500 but it can/has been done. unless i can afford a klune or atlas some day. i will be looking for a soft top too. i missed out on one on here last week darn it. i'll post more pics as i go in the next few weeks. oh yea, i almost forgot! my custom plates(never done that before) are the NV "save wildlife" plates with a pic of our state animal. yep, it's a big horn sheep. i couldn't resist.

She looks clean!!! Shocked That body looks like it's in incredible shape except for the RF corner. That'll be an easy fix tho. Good find-wish I could find a poptop for that price. Sounds like you got some good mods ahead for it. Keep us posted as the progress goes on. Popcorn

thanks guys. i've been doing some research on the swap i'm planning. it will definitely be more involved than it would have with the 84. that front diff will have to go, i have to decide if i want to wait a little longer to save for a bigger lift to go with the D60's my buddy is holding on to for me(he has a ton of old dodge trucks & parts, 75% of it 60's stuff.) or switch over the D44 out of my 84. i'd have to swap the gears between the 2 housings(the 79 has 4.10s) and the axles in the rear diffs. either way means new wheels, bigger meats if i get the bigger lift. so those centerlines will be for sale by this summer, if not sooner. they are 15x10, 5x4.5's except the spare is a 15x8.
another option i may explore is keeping the D44 front(the 84 version) and using a 8.75 in the rear. they are 80% as strong as a D60 but have better clearance. i think it would hold up to the 37's i eventually want.  just a lot to think about, i need to make a decision soon. i will make one or two trips this spring to borrego to go wheeling with my best friend before he moves to ohio this summer. then it's time to start the mods. i want to get the work done in time to still get a trip to bishop for fishing in july or august, maybe moab in the fall too.

i added  some more pics from the last couple of weekends, trips into the mountains that seperate las vegas from pahrump. the last couple of pics are of a few of the wild horses that roam our range. they are down low durring the winter and move up into the upper valley in the summer. plenty of burros, dear, mountain lions and coyotes too. i don't believe hunting is allowed here though.

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3008885

i won a bid for a dana 300 on ebay last weekend. i should see it next week some time. then the tear down and reconstruct will begin. i need to get it all done before the last week of march- camping/4x4 trip to borrego,ca that week. i'll post pics as i get them of the work the next 3 weeks. to recap, that will be swapping the front diff, t-case, nv4500 and rear axle shafts. oh yea, either new wheels or repaint my steelies. wish me luck.

thanks red. it's nice to have trails like that at my door step. death valley is 35 miles west of us, the sierras are 3-4 hours drive. even moab is only a day's drive from me. Smiley

i sure hope my t-case gets here by next friday. they shipped it DHL on thursday. it's coming from RI. next weekend i'm tearing the old engine/trans/t-case out. if i have the dana 300 by then i can get it all done but for the modifications to the driveshaft lengths. i should be able to finish it the following weekend. hopefully. i need to have it done before the 27th.

Thats a nice, clean truck.  Should be a fun project.  Are you sure the d300 is going to hold up to a full size rig?

yea, it will hold up. it's all gear driven, no chain, with an iron case and no slip yokes. i have seen a couple of early bronco's converted to nv4500+d300's w/big blocks and 39.5's. while they are lighter than us by some but those big blocks were both 514ci crate motors- about 600hp. they had hardened input/output shafts but they were otherwise stock. it is very similar to a np205.

Yeah, I know what a D300 is, but have just always heard that they are not a good match for a full size...  There are a lot of hop-up parts for them, so you could increase the strength that way.

i didn't mean anything by it, i didn't know anything about it until i did a bunch of research on it. here are two sites that convinced me to use it.
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/model_300.htm
http://www.high-impact.net/transmission_and_gear/Tcase_Dana300.htm

i have to work sat but should be done sat night or sunday morning. sunday night i should have more pics posted. i also will post details and part #'s that i used. i hope to have a test run on sunday afternoon.

added a few pics of my conversion. would have taken more if my camera hadn't died. i don't like borrowing stuff from people, even family.
anyway, it went fairly smoothly with the trans and t-case bolt in. for the crossmember, i just added a bracket we made from 3/16" steel, a L bracket with a couple of ears on the side for reinforcement. i will add another part to it when i put the skid plate in(have to make that) so the mount will have one more spot it's hooked to.
i mounted the clutch master where the ignition box was mounted, moving the box to the wheel house nearby. the pedal set up was a bit more complicated because someone installed a GM column. it was stolen and recovered about 10 years ago, i guess it needed a new one and they didn't want to hunt for a dodge piece. so when i mocked up the pedal to measure for the clutchmaster rod fit, i discovered the pedal hit the ignition switch. since i needed to fab a extension/bracket for the rod to bolt up, i cut and remade the pedal to go around the switch. then the extension for the rod comes down from that with near perfect alignment. i used the old brake pedal(sections) for part of the new extension too.
the twin stick shifter is something i picked up as a "buy it now" on ebay. sorry, i can't remember their name at the moment. i'll try to find that. it was just over a hundred bucks. i would have used the stock shifter but i didn't have it.
the NV4500 i have is a 23 spline gas engine model, so it hooks right up to any dana300, np208, np231, np241 or late dodge np205. the np203 can be made to work but it needs some modification to the mounting face. i have to go, when i get back on i'll try to get into whatever i may have forgotten.

thanks guys. i mounted my winch bumper yesterday. i found it at the local pick-a-part for $65. i cleaned it up and gave it a rattle can paint job for now. i don't have a big enough oven to powder coat it yet. i may try to get a couple of UV lamps soon so i can do bigger stuff. i'll get some pics up later in the week. no winch yet. i want to have one before moab in sept.

thought i'd add the p/n for the master/slave.  p/n 52107620AB for 98-99 rams is what i used. it has studs to mount it with. don't make the mistake i nearly did at first- i originally was going to order the master from a 92-93 ramcharger. it has a longer tube from the reservoir to the actuator and a slanted mounting pad for the reservoir to mount to the firewall that slants back. the down side is the actuator does not have studs for mounting. instead it has a square flange with one corner larger than the others, it twists into place. i didn't feel like trying to cut that stupid square in my firewall. one other note on that, you need to add a reinforcement plate on the inside where the actuator mounts. if you don't, the firewall will eventually crack. it would really suck to be on a trail somewhere and suddenly have no clutch.
the rest of the swap was pretty basic, other than the pedal and hole for the shifter it is like any other swap.p/n 4505365 x6 for the studs i used to mount the t-case to the trans. the studs that came with the dana 300 are not long enough to pass through the thick flange of the nv4500 adapter.
the dana uses 1310 ujoints, my dodge shafts had 7260 ujoints. i don't have the cv joint on the front at the moment because of this, i will look to add a 1310 cv for the front axle in the future, maybe the rear to when i get the bigger lift.  anyway, there's some more info i thought of. when i think of more i'll add it.

yep, i get out on a trail about every other weekend. we're blessed here in the southwest, there are trails every where. most of the ones around vegas are pretty mild except after a good t-storm. then after the washouts they can be pretty fun.

i spent yesterday with a group from pahrump valley 4 wheelers and jeep thrills out of vegas. i was the only full size with a bunch of jeeps. a TJ w/37" irok's and my self were the only guys not to do any by passes without getting hung up. i did destroy one tire and have a slow leak in another but was thinking about new tires anyway. that's what happens when you use that 360 to power over stuff with 33's that jeeps w/35's by pass or get stuck on. it was very cool listening to the rumble of my 360 in the canyons over those jeeps.

i'm not trying to dent her up but scratches aren't any big deal. i am going to make some sliders like gregs though.  that pic of me nose down in that narrow wash was pretty hairy. i had the tires on either side of the walls. that's the spot i kissed the rocker on that rock just to the front of me a moment later.

i found out last night the red jeep with the bikini top cracked his t-case output housing. he didn't know until he came home from work yesterday and saw the drips under the jeep. the yoke got scraped up too. we're still trying to figure that one out, as he has all the skid plates on his jeep. it would have to have been when he was backing up over something.

no, just incase the favor needed returning.   Wink i'm actually surprized i didn't get stuck a couple of times on this run. i wish i had more pics of the last wash we did but it was raining too hard to risk the camera. we made it up 3/4 of a mile before two of the guys got hung up. it used to reconnect with the main trail but now it's 7-8' ledge with a huge pile of rocks in the way. you can see the start of that wash right in the center of my last pic. that's the way it is out here, the trail is different after every rain, drastically some times.
