is that it? i have always been afraid to do stuff like that.lol i guess its just the machinest in me every thing has to be perfect
I can relate to that by being a machinest also but sometimes you just have to do it . Nice job Sam!! Did the 205 bolt right up to the 518? It looks like the 518 doesn't have that long adapter like the 727 does.

I feel very good about going the diesel/leaf/doubler route. I think the truck is really going to 'feel' and perform so much better, especially on the street. Jungle - yup the 205 came 'factory' behind the 518 (23-spline) and the overdrive 'is' the tailhousing and they just bolt right up. My other truck, the '93, is getting an '03 NV5600 and a mated 205 (originally from behind a '93 Ram w/ a Getrag 5-speed), and so long as you have a 29-spline mated 205 it'll also bolt straight up to the 5600 and it'll be bulletproof. Really looking forward to getting the 6-speed...and the exhaust brake ...in the tug boat - it'll be a completely different animal, and it'll finally be 'all motor' - no more converter slop to swear at . Maybe.... maybe...I'll have the 6-speed in the rig before Moab this year...but I doubt it. - S

Sam have you had the chance to drive a 6 speed ? A buddy has a 05 2500 24V and neither I or him really care for it due to the gears being so close I know he has a Bully Dog kit in it and now skip shifts it (2-4-6). I made the decision after driving his to go with the 5 speed when I do the CTD conversion on my crew.

I am going with a 518 & my 205 for the 440 RC. I'll have to change the twin shifter mount maybe. Do you have a pic of the shifter mounting bosses on the tail housing?

actually the close pattern is one of the reasons I like the 6-speed, and with the 3.54 gear ratio I can actually use 1st and 2nd gear with some utility. If the truck is empty I'll most likely also skip shifts like yer saying, but under big loads I'll enjoy taking my time and rowing through the gears. Plus, there's the good utility of the close ratios for decelerating against the e-brake. Thanks Sam. I am going with a 518 & my 205 for the 440 RC. I'll have to change the twin shifter mount maybe. Sorry but no - haven't got that far yet. Should be working out the shifter stuff within a month or so - Sam

Well, I loved it during normal driving, and while towing. I hated it when I was driving from the South side of San Antonio in rush hour.

For this they used crushed plastic media - it's actually recycled crushed/pulverized buttons from old shirts. Man I'll tell ya...this blasting thing is THE way to go. Cost me $200 to blast the 6BT, 518, t-cases, and some small stuff - blasted clean and ready to paint, all in an hour. Can't beat it, and everything is completely clean and degreased. - S

Looks good Sam! I think you need to blast the fins on the intake side of the turbo though.

Looks good Sam! I think you need to blast the fins on the intake side of the turbo though. - naawwww...I'll leave the 'turbocharger tech' to the professionals . About the only things I'll bomb on this 6BT is the basic pump mods, and I'll definitely do a 14cm collar. When funds permit I'll upgrade to a PDR HX-35 turbo and an ATS manifold. That'll probably be about it - I'll probably even leave the stock sticks in there.

 - leafs are 'in' Front reinforced, ready to 'rock' 5 g-8 bolts aught to keep it all together. Also seam-welded the front crossmember to the frame to 'box' it all in. Rear spring in with no real weight on it. ORD u-bolt flip kit in the mail - no draggin' u-bolts... inside view of the ORD shackles - Uber HD stuff under compression the spring stretches about 4" which should take the shackle back to just about a 45* angle, maybe more with the weight of the whole back of the truck on it - aught to be just right. And if the angle isn't back enough...well I guess I'll drill 6 more friggin' holes... Engine gets it's new seals and paint next; t-case(s) done tomorrow....closer each day. - S

What springs are you using in the rear again?

they're 'dem Chevy 56" 3/4-ton 'Burban's from Pro Comp. They squat a lot more than the fronts do - they look like a huge lift at first but like you said with weight they'll settle down nicely...and I have a bunch more weight...I just hope I factored in enough lift. Worked a wheel swap with Trevor - add the tires I've been wanting and it looks like I'll have the 'Moab' shoes on in time Looks real good!!! The ORD shackle and u-bolt kit is very nice. Andrew Thanks to you bud - the ref to ORD is very much appreciated

Good day in the shop - 6BT is stripped, valves adjusted, and should be going back together tomorrow... killed the KDP - 'Killer Dowel Pin' (location shown at tip of 'driver) - this is the tab that get's bolted in place to keep the pin from wiggling out and destroying the engine... ...and in place. Use loctite to make sure the bolt itself doesn't come out too... Took a bunch of pics of sub assemblies so I can a: remember where stuff went, and b: remember how stuff went... Also got most of the pertinent seals and gaskets from NAPA, plus a new Cummins water pump from the dealer - - M2

You'll love the NV5600. The ratios are perfectly matched to the cummins. Its even fun to drive unloaded, start in 2nd and drive it like a five speed.

well I used my '93s engine bay as the 'demo' and it's a 6BT-powered rig, plus the RC has a 3" body lift...and providing the '93 and this '78 chassis are the same I'll be golden. So far everything has been a dead-nuts match so we should be good to go, but until it's all back together.... - What I'm most concerned with is the core support - I have a feeling it will need to be significantly 'remodled' Have to make room for the intercooler, and...I have to do something with the hinge mounts/brackets for the front clip - they're kinda weak - not quite up to 'Uber' standards. How's it go?..."when in doubt, use thicker steel???" Tell ya what was sweet tho - the 6BT and its engine mounts bolted up in the exact same holes that the 452 did - THAT was particularly nice. 'Spoon already had that one proofed so I wasn't worried, but it sure was nice to actually see it line right up - M2

if you can fin a core support from a 92-93 truck that not rotten or bent all up, the 78 sheet metal will bolt up with very minor fab work, the fenders line right up the only thing that needs to be redone is the lower grill apron mounts
and it will all fit like it was meant to be
and for who asked above, if you use the 1st gen flywheel cover/engine adaptor then you don't need a body lift, but if you use one from a second gen truck then you need a lift or to cut the firewall

Yup, using the factory '78 crossmember, also the same for a small block . good day today - reached my milestone - the driveline is 'in'. It's long.....and heavy.....and should be 100% Cummins-proof. Biggest issue will be protecting the doubler from impacts, because if I land the truck on the doubler there's every guarantee that the doubler will just laugh....but the back half of the tranny will break into lots of small pieces. So......all I have to do is build a really big arse monster belly shield/tranny-doubler mount thingie...... also had to make a retianer plate for the front face of the 203 - the 518's rear face doesn't do the same job as the original spec 727 rear face, so... Party on

Whoa, you can almost just hook the rear axle to the 205 ouput shaft, any idea on how long is the rear shaft going to be?

Looks sweet Max. Are you gonna change your wheelbase cuz of the long driveline or just use a short driveshaft out back? Whats the measurement from rear output to yoke?

thanks Willie! Hey you gonna be at Moab this year? - be great to see ya again dude Today was kinda fun - had a couple friends over to help Tracy and me lift the front clip back more or less into place, and afterwards Trevor's lil boy Lucas just had to grab a wrench and help us put the final torque on the doubler!! - Sam
