MOAB TRIP 2017
« on: June 12, 2016, 10:57:28 AM »
I am putting a plan together to get some of us Texas members up to Moab sometime AFTER Easter of next year (2017). Most of us have our rigs and trailers sorted out well enough to justify this adventure at this point, and it would be great to get to meet some of the guys in that area. If we can get enough interest it would be great to turn this into a Ram Jam type event...obviously we all know the pitfalls of organizing that sort of thing, but if we keep it simple it might not be too much of a fiasco  ;D

The plan is to get at least 3 full days of wheeling in, camp at KOA most likely, and figure out how to fit 20 hours of driving on each end of this adventure.  Any advice on where to go and how to plan out the trail riding would be much appreciated. We all have around 37" tires and lockers of some sort so we do like some challenges, but not really wanting to blow it up the first day.

There are better places than the KOA to stay. They aren't known to be the friendliest camp ground towards off road groups.

Can you recommend any places?... We have never been up to the area so not too sure what to expect

http://www.highwaywestvacations.com/properties/canyonlands/accommodations Right in the middle of town and lots of shade. also the Big Horn Lodge and Red Stone Inn are nice if you prefer a hotel.

VRBO.com is good to if you have a group and want to spit a house or condo.

111 in Moab according to the national weather. Bet the bottom of those canyons would be hotter than a pissed on monkey.

RJ '14 was in Sept. The trails were mostly empty and the weather was perfect. Might want to consider scooting the schedule forward a few months?

I am not sure if we can wait until next september ;D and unfortunately it won't be in the cards this year... But several of us on ramcharger.net are on board for the first week of May 2017. We will probably need until May just to get everything ready and trucks prepped ;D

It would appear that the temps are still fairly mild in early May in Moab, but I can only assume that the desert can be a bit brutal when temps make it over 90

lemme offer another possibility  8) .  Just so happens that there is an event at Moab called Fullsize Invasion (FSI), and it happens concurrently with Easter Jeep Safari, and the dates for EJS 2017 are April 8-16.  We did FSI this year and it was a total blast.  EJS is a busy time in Moab - LOTS of Jeeps there that week, but that doesn't really affect the Full Size gang's activities much.

That said, May is also a great time to be in Moab.  We were there both for FSI (March) and again in May with my local off road club, and both times were great :).

I was considering the FSI week as it did look like a lot fun. It looks like y'all got some awesome publicity with 4wheel Magazine  {cool} ... It is awesome to see some Dodges making the jeeps look bad  :o  How busy were the trails and camp sites? I would assume most of the people are pretty cool, but big crowds are not really my style

It's getting to be where anytime the temps are decent it's crazy busy. Although yes, EJS is a total madhouse. A fun total madhouse, but a madhouse nonetheless. Still worth coming to town though.

Keep an eye on moabhappenings.com calendar to see what else is happening the week you want to come. If you can plan for a marathon weekend, car show, or mountain bike race then the wheeling trails aren't as bad. :)
Reserve your rooms / condos way way early is my best recommendation. Like now.
    See ya then!

Spanish Trails campground was a good on for offroad groups last time I was there.

Good Trails that won't wreck you rig-
    - Poison spyder
    - fins and things- Classic Moab
-Metal masher- sounds worse than it is

that it off the top of my head.

Most of Moab isn't straight carnage.  Only a few places get nasty.

Like Mad Max, I would recommend May, the weather was warm, but not yet blazing hot, the days were long, and vegetation was still green and relatively lush for Moab.

Subscribed. I would like to make it, but may not be able to if not during summer.

Did the hot rod power tour this year and it was awesome. Hoping to do a car related trip every year. Keep us informed!

Well How was the trip? I am doing a Ramcharger Meet in Idaho Aug 19th 2017. https://www.facebook.com/events/387019614995360/
that is the link to the Facebook event.
Anyone who loves the Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trailduster is welcome to attend this event even if you do not own one. If you show up in a non Mopar vehicle be prepared to get ridiculed. Mopar or no car is a way of life. Every one is welcome to show up the day before which is Friday the 18th of 2017. We have several acres and can accommodate a few of the members here at our property whether you bring an RV or a tent. This is a family friendly non alcoholic event. We are non smokers but will have a smoking area for you to put your butts in. I will post links to motels and RV parks near us as well as attractions in our area and everything I know of going on that weekend outside this event. On the day of the event Saturday August 19th 2017 at 8 am we will leave from my house. If you want breakfast eat before 8 or eat on the road. Driver meeting at 7:45 AM. Where we go from there is still to be determined and will be voted on in the group. We have several options in the area. How the day goes after that will be play it by ear other than a picnic lunch somewhere along the trail mid day. Bring your own lunch. Who knows what time we will arrive back at my house. Plan is to be back before dark. When we get back we will have a pot luck BBQ diner. We have a couple of extra refrigerators that will be cold and ready to hold what you bring until time to cook. Anyone who wishes to spend the night is welcome to and then you can head out fresh on Sunday the 20th. We will require 1 FRS type radio in each vehicle for safety. Anyone who has extras please bring them for those who can not afford to buy one. FRS radio check will happen Saturday morning at 7:45 AM. Mechanics please bring your tools in case we have issues on the trail. I am sure I have missed some stuff so this will get updated as I think of stuff.

They are there as we speak. Pics up on Facebook. Mopar and more Wheelers IIRC.
