One of my bumpers is rated for 7000 lbs, that fits most needs. Most receiver hitches are only rated for 5000 lbs, unless you have an equalizer hitch, then they go to 10000.

I think i might just fix the Fey Bumper (weld shut holes for trailer recepticles) and paint it the same grey it came with... keeping it simple.
Then add some kind of recovery equipment tow hooks lateron.

Today i ordered a sample for the large tailgate trim clip.
Is there any interest in these parts overseas?

Found a solution on how to install the DODGE emblem on the hood, during removal i destroyed the original metal clips fastening it in the three bores:

Use the clips from a future race truck that will have its hood recreated in carbon fiber  ;D
    So that's done as well.

Ordering the headlight adjusters and window guide felts today.

tow hooks , the oval shape holes in your frame are for tow hooks called tee hooks , they insert , and turn into place . they are in different planes on the frame . a tee hook with a chain grab hook attached /linked  works well .

I looked over the damage on the bumper it came with (it looks just the same like the stuff sold today) and i think i can whip up a few patches and reinforcements, weld the diamond plate back on, bend the one corner back into shape (angle iron for the corners) and have it painted.

    Two things:

What the f do i have to do, chant or who do i have to pray to to get the front drip rail moulding reinstalled?
    Damn stubborn pieces...

    And the 2nd:

What mods does it take to run 33s (255/85 R16) on and off-road without rubbing?

I was thinking along the lines of lifting it juuuust a hair... like 2.5", not more than that. I need to clear the garage door  ;D

Today i took delivery of 300$ worth of trim retainers... before mourning the loss of budget, i proceeded with installing them and the trim.
    Hurts...

Last things really "needed" for completion are the glass runners for the doors.
Install glass, steam clean front axle, replace front brake hoses, flush system, get it inspected and tag it.

Should be road legal the end of this month  ;D ;D ;D

    Gah...
    Hunting exhaust leaks:

Then i found the manifolds to be leaking as well... i guess they will meet the belt sander and receive a set of remflex gaskets...

Also fixing bozo moves. I broke off the ground tab on the tank sending unit (remember this is the special TSB sending unit with the feed pump built into it).

I am getting really good at this. It takes me 15 minutes to extract the tank from the truck...

The ground tab was not really damaged, it just snapped at the spot weld. I was able to solder it back on.

I do that too... did not help, still small leaks, i guess due to a slightly warped manifold.
The bolts and studs have been replaced when i installed the new gaskets, i don't think they will snap.

humm , I managed to with a hand 4 inch grinder straighten a set of magnum manifolds ,,,  If there had been no pretrusions a belt sander or inline  would have worked easier . A milling machine ?

Milling them would be nice but i think that is way too much effort for manifolds that will warp again over time.

The belt sander should do fine to level the ports to eachother and give a nice sealing surface for the remflex graphite gaskets (expensive but work very well).
I do not intend to take off a lot of material, just a general cleanup...

I grew tired of constantly having to recharge this darn battery.

It lacked a cover for the positive battery post anyways so i solved two problems with Mother Huldas old Bosch S4.

This thing sat on the shelf in my shop for two years disconnected and it held its charge really, really well.
For comparison: the old Duralast is rated at 660cca, the Bosch is 740cca.

When fully charged, the Duralast starts the engine no problem, but if it doesn't start (like when your fuel tank is empty and you don't notice) it's dead after the second 15-sec try.

The Bosch is like "come on, is that all you got?"  ;D

humm LOL yes , we had a carbon pile load tester at work , the new batterys we got were allready "wet " , they said 900cca but you were hard pressed to find one that did 200 on the tester ..... fully charged and brand new .many different "low bid" brands . excide was about the best of them ...

Newest reproduction parts on the truck. I know the material is way too thick but that's all i had right now.
    Consider it a prototype.

The factory duct would not fit any more because i changed the AC plumbing during my SD709 conversion.

My truck was missing the black rubber pieces up by the radiator..also the rubber pieces down by the frame rails which I definitely need... is the piece by the radiator top more to keep the water from coming in or to help airflow?

Hunting for and finding exhaust leaks:

All gaskets will be redone in stainless reinforced graphite gasket material.
The cause is that the sealing surfaces are worn unevenly... a large belt sander will fix that.

Reportedly, the belt sander i wanted to use would make things worse.
So i am making things worse by hand.

Planing the manifolds by hand, with a file and a ruler. Stupid fun.  ::)

    I'll second that.
I used to be into SAABs (yes it's a ____ story). Specifically the little wedgy Sonnett III cars. They run a F*rd of Europe V4 with siamesed exhaust manifold on each bank. I had a custom exhaust that made it better than usual, but they often leaked at the manifold/pipe union. The copper Permatex has enough solids that it would seal the leaks, and bonus, acts as a antisieze to some extent.
Per above, I would recommend sealing the mating surfaces with the Ultra Copper RTV.

    A flat surface

Which i am lacking... my workbench is a 2" thick door card, fixed to a metal frame with wood screws and a sheet of metal bolted on top of that.
That's far from flat... i could not find a large tile or something similar to use as a lapping surface.

The flattest readily available material is pane glass. If you can find a thick glass mirror or similar and put the sandpaper face up on it, you'll get it quite flat.

Dropped off the rear bumper - using the one it came with - at the media blasters shop today.
Should have it back next week.

It needs a little work, like bending it back into shape, a few patch panels made and welded in and paint.
    Should be done quickly.

A big drill press table works.  ::)

Yea, I know mine is a little bit bigger then most.

A table saw may work also. Or wait until the wife goes shopping, and use the countertop.   :o  ;D

Almost no more exhaust leaks! Yay!
The last remaining leaks are at the joints. Need to expand the end on the y-pipe a bit.

Aaaaand as with all Dodge trucks of that era, i need to do something about the fuel pickup in the tank.
There's five gallons in the tank and as soon as the truck sits at an angle (and it has tons of "dodge lean") it doesn't want to run.

I have a pair of these walbro snowmobile fuel pickups.

I had absolutely NO problems whatsoever when i used these installed in the very ends of Mother Hulda's (my former '76 W200) fuel tank.

The fuel pump was able to suck that tank DRY with this setup, literally dry.

So these will be installed in Mary's fuel tank... lemme see if i can push these through the hole for the sending unit this time.
I kind of doubt it... but i have the fuel tank of Mr. Curtis (race truck) to test that.

    Product Description

Walbro in-tank pickups are great for fuel cells/tanks without internal baffles. They have 70 micron mesh that serve as a pre-filter. When the pickup is submerged in gas it draws through the mesh. The pickups hold small amount of gas when not submerged. When that small amount of gas is depleted the pickup will shut preventing the pump from sucking air.  When the pickup becomes submerged again it will open to begin drawing gas again.

The pickups are usually run in quantities of 3 or 4 depending on the configuration. When there is a possibility of the fuel system being run completely dry, Walbro recommends running one pickup with a bleed in it.

The Walbro pickups have a 5/16" fitting on top. They are approximately 3" in diameter and 2" tall.

Pretty cool, I did not know they made such a thing.

I found a way to make them fit through the hole for the sending unit.

Take them apart, cut a little superflous material, voila.
Now i need to find a way to put them back together inside the fuel tank... where's a gynecologist when you need one?  ;)

Had the truck moved to a place that does steam cleaning - to get the front axle and front of the frame cleaned - truck died at that place and will not stay running because of fuel starvation.
    Crap.

It's coming back today and i will have to see what's wrong this time.

Pre-pump is working (can hear it humming in the tank), i suspect something like the mechanical fuel pump or a clogged filter albeit that's new and huge (lots of surface to clog).

one would    think   that the pick up that ran out of fuel in the tank first , would then suck air , being easier than liquid to move .

    Well "clogged" was close:

That looks like charcoal from the evap canisters to me.
There was a bunch of that clogging up passages in the lid of the carb... i have NO clue how it got there.
Going to clean out the carb and inspect the canisters today.

I think i kinda figured out how that happened:

When i drove the truck onto the flatbed hauler (had her picked up to get steam cleaned) i had to hit the brakes with the left foot.
Usually that's my clutch-foot and it hits hard  ;D

That might have shook loose a bunch of that granulate which was already hiding in the evap hose going to the bowl vent.
This has been the entry point into the carburetor.
Gravity and fuel flow took over from there.

Dunno if it is normal that this granulate can trickle from the vapor canister and i don't know how i am going to prevent that from happening in the future (well, except from "remove and forget").

its making "safe" gasoline for your carb !!  install an in line fuel filter between the canister and the carb .

I just pulled the fuel pump off the block on my truck yesterday and found something similar. I could see that the inlet line to the pump was packed solid with hay and grain (wheat?) and the inlet side of the pump was also filled with the same stuff. I'm 99% sure my truck was used as a farm truck all it's life before I got it. ::)

The first thing that came to mind when I saw your pics was that it looks like the insides of the rubber fuel lines are probably breaking down. The ethanol in the gas around here can do that to rubber over time. Either way, it looks like a full carb clean and rebuild is in your immediate future.

There is supposed to be a screen that prevents the granules from leaving the canister.

Go to the boneyard and find a can off a newer rig. I used the canister off a Dakota on my 1974.

That is already in my past.
First thing i did to this engine was a carb rebuild including installing bushings for the throttle shafts.

Albeit it looks like it, it's not rubber. It is the charcoal granulate from one of the canisters (the one filtering the vapor coming from the fuel bowl).
I turned it over and let the fuel evaporate... then cleaned the rest with pressurized air.

I did not change any of the settings, just gave it a hair higher float level and put it back together.

No more problems, starts, runs and drives nice again.
