Here's Mr. New World Order himself, Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, attempting to strike the specter of fear once again in order to push the legislation he co-sponsored which would basically put an end to the free exchange of information and ideas on the American internet...

Impossible, not any one person owns the interntet. The internet is a life form of its own.

To kill the internet you would have to kill all communication systems in the world and all of the electrcity in the world. That ain't gonna happen. Global business runs on the intenet.

In China they limit the websites you could visit.  I know many workplaces have firewalls in place to limit access to certain types of websites.  It is feasible for the government to require all US ISPs to enact such filters to limit our internet access.  Not saying they could 100% control what we see on the net, but they could make it very difficult.

And the 'Change' just keeps on coming.   Undecided

Liberals never learn.  They take the same failed philosophy and try to apply it to all things in hopes that it might work someplace.  Terrorists don't need to attack the US directly ever again.  Our politicians are going to tear us apart from the inside and reduce this country to third world status.

If you shut down the nodes you can kill the internet.

If they even try it every communications company will pound them on the 1st amendment. Not to mention the citizens. Even then it would be hard to keep a server off of a proxy site and then what. The Internet has a life of its own.

You can still set up peer to peer networks over cell or land lines. Like said unless they kill all forms of communication and ban all computers it won't happen.

The line of security vs opression is in how it's used.  No matter what, the man behind the desk answers to congress.  As a security measure it has merit.  I don't want hackers in the fbi websites, and this gives the government the ability to regulate such things.

Too "patriot act" to ever pass in my opinion.

Maybe I'm giving the government too much credit, but they can control those as well.  Unless you have your own personal wires set up or a frequency the FCC can't control/regulate, you'd be screwed.  Phone lines can be controlled.

I doubt the government would be able to totally take away the 1st amendment in one fell swoop, but by infringing on it one little baby step at a time, the same way the Liberals have approached everything else, they can make it happen.  Politicians in general are sneaky, lying bastards.  They will achieve their goals one baby step at a time.  Look at sales taxes for example.  I don't know about your area, but I remember a time 15-20 years ago when our local sales taxes were under 6%.  Now just about every town in a 50 mile radius has a sales tax over 8% with plenty closing in on 9%.  And most of them were incremented 1/8 - 1/4 cent at a time.  Heck, just look at Canada, specifically Ontario.  They have a sales tax that was supposed to be temporary (GST I believe) that was supposed to have expired years ago, but is still in place.  Politicians figure out the smallest step they can get away with and run with it.  And keep incrementing by that step until they achieve their goal.

Or maybe I'm not giving them enough credit. It seems to me that it would impossible to monitor each and every phone line in the world for data transmissions.

The US government doesn't have to monitor every phone line in the world, just the US.  And they don't really have to do all that much monitoring.  You don't think they could regulate what is carried over a phone line?  Or cable?  Today's data transmissions operate at a different frequency than voice.  Maybe you could set up something based on the old dial-up technology and bulletin boards, but if the government were to regulate/control the infrastructure, I doubt even that would work.

He mean Pres. Obama.

Take it from somebody who is in IT and is required by law to filter internet traffic(if I want govt. money).  It is easier than you guys think to filter and monitor what goes on, online.  Our internet filter keeps track of who goes where, what time, which computer/ip address they were on, ect.  And honestly most internet filters that are enterprise level pieces of equipment, you have a hard time circumventing to get to an annonymizer/proxy website.  I have been trying all year(to test the equipment because I'm in charge of it) to go around it and it isn't going to happen.  With VOIP becoming very main stream it is even eaiser to see whats going on.  Reviewing that data however is the real kicker.  It doesn't take much time to record it, but to review it , that is where it gets to be quite the process.  It takes time to call up that information from a database and change it into a usable form.  But like it has been said, China already does it, within ther county.

I work in a school and I am actuall fighting with teachers now because they think I am spying on them all day...  Like managing 500+ users, 350 computers and 13 servers, by myself, doesn't give me enough to do  Roll Eyes Grin

It's not the internet they're trying to shut down. Just the access to it. That part is easy. Read the articles about what they just did. And if the rest goes through, Sam could get into trouble with them, because of the member we have from there. Aussie Internet. This is the part where Sam could get into trouble. Webmasters
