Detroit Police stop pillow fight before feathers can fly This is just so stupid, its funny. Detroit's finest must have wanted to save the jail some money. The pillow fight, which was to be one of at least 50 across the world Saturday organized by people on social networking Web sites, was shut down by Detroit police officers who were stationed at the park.
"I am furious," 23-year-old Elida Quesada of Ferndale said as she fumed while watching officers take pillows as soon as people showed up with them. "It (a pillow fight) is so silly and childlike. It would have been fun. It seems like everything that is fun is illegal." Michael Davis, 32, of Hamtramck said, "They took my pillows, but let me keep my cases." "They told me I needed a permit. I can't understand." A pillow permit? is there a different one for concealed carry of said pillow?Scott Harris, a 48-year-old Ferndale resident whose pillow was taken by officers, was not as understanding. "It is not illegal to own a pillow," he said. So all you that always have to defend the police departments actions, can you tell me what law allows the police to confiscate pillows? How do you defend the police that lied, and stole the pillows? Don't the police have to give them a receipt when they confiscate something?Officers in blue jumpsuits were polite to the people who were stopped, but firm about seizing the pillows. One officer told a would-be pillow fighter that 5,000 pillows had been seized by the planned 4 p.m. start of the event. Link 1Link 2

It's possible that they needed to get a permit from the city to have the event itself. I know even in our small town we can't even have a lemonade stand on the sidewalk without a permit from the city.

I understand that, But that would go against the organizers, or even they could ask the participants to leave, but they have no legal right to confiscate pillows.

Probably not but with the liberals running amok in this country these days, it's not going to faze most people if they are trying the keep people from hurting them selves with things like guns, pillows, hammers, hot coffee, feather dusters, etc. Perhaps the police will use the excuse of preventing a riot. Imagine the utter chaos and destruction if pillow fights became common in out city streets. It just wouldn't be safe to come out of the house to get your latte anymore.

That could be. It looks pretty dangerous.

The trouble is, in Detroit a simple pillow fight would probably escalate into a burn down the town thing. Probably had people out there with 'loaded' pillows.

They should all be forced to line up and each take a swift kick to the man-gina for even considering the fact that this might be a fun or cool thing to do.

That would be my guess on why the cops did what they did. I doubt that in this day in age you could get any 5000 people to play nice together … even for something as silly as a pillow fight. Some morons would start throwing punches and hurting people and the whole thing would turn into a riot. I’m thinking the cops were just trying to prevent having a big mess on their hands …. I wonder what happened in other cities where this was supposed to take place.

Don't blame the cops, it was the city council or mayor that called this in to be stopped.

I have not seen much blame on the cops, In fact PrimerGrey was the only to call them names. I think the whole thing was a waste of resources, and bad for police/ citizen relations. Cops are supposed to enforce the laws, Taking the pillows without giving them an evidence receipt is theft.

Cops are forced to do what the leaders of the city tell them to do. If they say block off down town so the parade can't go through they have to do it, regardless if it is a waste or not. The waste is the city council or major, not the cops.
Here in my city this is something the mayor can't do on his own, would take city council to do this. We have experienced this by the shit council in years past. Spring break is big here since we have one of the few beaches allowed to be driven on, and is a mega million dollar surge in retail due to this.
Our stupid city council had basically made this a place nobody wanted to come to spring break for and they used the police to do this. Luckily the crap council had faded away and it is once again a spring break attraction, but new crap took it's place and has been trying to take it away again, luckily the votes just happened and there is a new council. Now hopefully they don't suck like the others.

I don't know about it turning into a riot.... ....but we have a few orthopedic pillows here for my wife and son....that if I hit you with it, if it didn't break your neck, it would probably knock you out.... ....and yet very comfortable to sleep with....guess they would classify as a "loaded concealed pillow".... Seems strange to me, that with all those empty pillow cases in downtown Detroit, that there wasn't any looting going on.... Paul

It sounds to me like innocent fun. The more time passes, the fewer excuses people can think of to bring a whole neighborhood together for something. Anything. The fact that a few thousand people showed up for something like a pillowfight impresses me. Anyone here ever toss maturity aside for a few minutes? I do sometimes, and in a moment of spontaneity i have that gigglebox carefree fun that i remember having as a kid. Those couple minutes are great, and its worth it if a few people think im a D-bag for enjoying them. Maby i should grow up. Maby other people should realise that every moment of life doesnt need to be "serious buisness".
