Here's a photo of my 1985 D350 Custom Crew Cab...my dad had it for 10 years and decided to give it to me. I just flew down to Arizona last week and drove it back to North Dakota. It is very clean---no rust. Only body damage is the tailgate--my dad left the gate up and pulled out from the fifth wheel once---and only once. It is one long rig!I have a sign and custom paint business and am making the sign end of it completely mobile---I'm purchasing a trailer. The trailer will be painted to match the truck. Almost 200K on it now. Currently has a 360 and four speed...plans include a 92-93 4x4 CTD Donor rig. Give me a year and it should be 4WD with the B5.9. Whether or not it stays SRW will be a gametime decision---depends on what donor rig is. Same with transmission, although I'd prefer to use the 5-spd. The wheels are nice--but they're 16.5"s...so I may change that. I plan to finish the body work and paint by this fall. The leading color now is Go Man Go orange exterior (from the new Dodge Ram Daytona). I will use the 91-93 painted grille (painted body color with matte black inserts). I'll opt for the concealed mount mirrors--pull the extended setup my dad made off. He pulled a 32 ft Holiday Rambler fifth wheel trailer. I'll remove all current badges and emblems, fill any holes and use the "RAM 3500," "HEAVY DUTY," ram shields, "CUMMINS," and "4 x 4" emblems from the current 3500---but I'll likely leave off the one zero from "RAM 3500" to get "350". I also plan to replace the slider with fixed glass and tint everything to max allowable by law. I'd like to use the 99-2002 Quad Cab leather benches (2 of them) with the integrated seatbelts...but they are spendy and hard to find. I may just use the 2004-2005 benches. I want to use the 92-93 steering column. I am doing much to sound and heat insulate the firewall, cab cab and doors. I'll have a headliner made (as far as I can tell, none were ever offered from the factory--same with carpet...or at least full carpet.) And I'll fab some door panels---don't know if anyone ever noticed--but on these crews, the front panels are the 81-90 panels, but the rear are the previous generation panels--72-80.(funny thing the older type seem to be a higher quality panel)Same with the exterior of the door skins behind the handles. The front have the dish around the handle, the rears do not. Now Crew cabs are luxury vehicles---not when this was made! Only reason you bought one of these was ranching or as a work truck. Will be nice when I complete it. Anyway, love to hear what you guys think. I'll keep progress posted!

here's a photo where you can see the difference in the front to rear doors around the handles---they didn't want to spend any more money than absolutely necessary on cosmetic items...they never created an updated skin for the rear doors after 1980...just continured using the previous generation...

Thanks HardRunner... I'm really happy to be it's new owner...my dad bought it from the Ford dealer in Sandy, Oregon--(they had taken it in on trade from a rancher) I believe in 1996. It sat most of the last two years--wouldn't pass emissions anymore in AZ...and my parents sold their fifth wheel. So my dad offered it to me if I could come down and pick it up. Needless to say I jumped at the offer. It was always his dream to finish it the way I plan to. I just love these crew cabs. Anyone know? Is 1985 the last year of the crew, or 1986? The four speed is ok...synchros are not working so well between 2nd and 3rd--can't short-shift it. Have to get RPMs up to get it into 3rd most of the time. This has the 3.73 rear, so highway speeds are not too hard to achieve. On the way up thru NM, CO, WY, SD, and ND I was able to maintain 70, while pulling just under 3000 RPMs. Got 11 mpg most of the way. Every cowboy in a Dodge thru Wyoming (and even some in Fords--we all know cowboys don't drive Chevys ) was giving me the thumbs up and wave. Ah, I miss Wyoming--used to live in Laramie.

I think it sounds like a great project. As long as you understand the money you'll have to spend, you won't regret it. I was lucky and only had to do the Cummins swap on mine. The previous owner did all of the other work. Good luck with it.

Hey Pete, I have seen yours on the site here.. it looks great. My money will largely be in the donor rig and in my own labor. I'm a paint and body guy, so I'll handle all that myself. Something that may cost $10,000 for a complete at a good shop just costs me materials plus my time. I just priced out the (Chrysler code PVE) Tangerine Pearlcoat paint (also know as the new Go Man Go orange)...my cost is $593/gal in PPG DBC. I'll need 1.5 gals. Though I have not settled on that color just yet. It is in the highest price level for DBC. I may very well choose something else or mix up my own color.
I figure I can handle the mechanical and swap without too much trouble. I plan on outsourcing the headliner and the driveshaft for sure. Most of the rest I'll do myself. I will have a lot in sweat equity in it...that's for sure.

Thanks Bruiser!
After getting the price on the Go Man Go Orange ($593/gal in PPG DBC)...I have pretty much decided to go with a Silver base and PPG Radiance Orange Glow candy over the top. I'll use PPG OmniAU MBC silver with some dry pearls to save some money on the base...I have an MBC mixing rack at my disposal. The gallon of Radiance only costs about $250 or so...a far cry from the $890 for the 1.5 gal of Go Man Go. For some reason that color is at the highest price level for DBC..the dreaded "Z" code.

It is long...no question about it...Yeah..the SRW trucks look longer than the DRWs for some reason. The dually fenders must break it up for the eye or something. 149" wheelbase I believe.

You're right. The srw looks a lot longer than the drw. I drew a crowd today when I went to the local Dodge dealership to buy a new sidemarker light. The mechanics were all over the Dodge asking questions. The salesmen, not so much.

yeah, Pete...I like the body-color grille...tried to order my paint-to-match grille yesterday, but place was out of stock...I plan on body color grille with matte black inserts...I will remove the "DODGE" text from the front of my hood also.
This guy started with a 92 and stretched the frame for the crew cab. I would think it is easier starting like you did and I am...with the crew cab frame to begin with...

looks sweet 85redcrew...
did you swap the grille? I heard that the headlights sit in a slightly different location and they are recessed about 1/2" farther in the older support...what did you run into? Eventually, when I do the CTD swap, I'll use the core support from the 92-93 diesel, so it will not be an issue, but I'd like use the 91-93 grille when I do the paint this summer.

Alas,I cant claim any building on it......... yet! I do know it was a grille swap. A guy up in Port Angeles Washington did the work on it. i'll get there though. thanks for the compliment!

yep...down in Portland..will be back up to Lynnwood on Sunday evening to see my grandparents and leave out of Seatac Monday evening for home.
No kidding on Fargo's cold weather...it sucks. We are out of there as soon as my wife finishes school. Winter is about six months long. And actual temps around 30-40 below zero are often reached. Windchills can easily reach 70 or 80 below. The wind never stops in the winter either.

just changed and made up my mind...black it is...not going with orange...what made my decision for me? The trailer I will purchase for my business may be purchased in black...I won't have to paint the trailer to match if I paint the crew black. Save time & money...two things I do not have an abundance of.

Hey 50ply...thanks for the comments...those pictures were taken at HWY 75...used to work full-time out there---first at the counter and inventory, then back in the body shop. I still do some work on builders for Rob out there. No more parts there though...he sold his inventory last October and the land and buildings are for sale now.

Some shots of my dash and instruments and the plans for them as my CTD repower project continues: Here's the set-up my Dad had (and is how it is set-up now) in my 1985 D350 (he owned it before me) It's functional. but not great, especially with the tach located down low. As I complete my CTD conversion...I have other plans for the panel. I have purchased some instruments (tach and 4-1, and additional temp guages) from a hurricane-damaged diesel boat. They are made by Faria. I will buy a matching speedo. I plan to create a new surface that overlays the existing plastic trim to mount the new instruments. I'll have to make a provision for an odometer, as boats usually do not have them. Here's a picture of my tach--complete with digital hourmeter: Here's the 4-1 here's my additional temp guage---(I will run oil temp or diff temp..)

The truck came with them attached. The sunvisor I could live without, but the windbreak attached to the cab + bed I really like. It breaks up the body lines. The truck is a complete package and in person looks "right".

And I'll fab some door panels---don't know if anyone ever noticed--but on these crews, the front panels are the 81-90 panels, but the rear are the previous generation panels--72-80.(funny thing the older type seem to be a higher quality panel)Same with the exterior of the door skins behind the handles. The front have the dish around the handle, the rears do not. First off nice truck....looking forward to seeing it completed. As for the door panels on the rear of these crew cabs...I did notice, actually something else is the rear seat is dern close to a front seat in design...at least in my truck. I have not yet determined what seats to put in mine but the front one baddly needs to be replaced so I am on the hunt. am I correct in looking for a rear door for my CC that any year of that body style will then fit? Anyone know? NoRM

thanks MunK... I just measured the seat from an 2004 Ram (it was a CTD 3500) Nice leather, heated power bench with the sweet flip down center compartment....it will just fit in my cab...really close to being too wide. My seat is broken down on the driver side...plus I want to make my interior very nice...like today's cabs. I want to buy a pair for my crew. Have to start saving some money for them...I also like the benches from the 99-02 Quad Cabs with the integrated seatbelts--but they are spendy in leather...$600-$1000 used... I have seen the 2003-current cheaper than that...

Hello, yes I recognize it, I'm the new proud owner of that black beauty. I was lucky enough to catch the auction just after it ended, and talked the owner into letting me buy it from him after I returned from Iraq. I go to pick it up in a week, and drive it back to Az. You're more than welcome to query me on it's details after I get it home.

Hey, thanks for the welcome, I really appreciate it. Yes, I'm stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Az. (16 year vet so far) I'm looking forward to getting my C/C Ram out of the harsh Iowa weather, and out to the dry desert. Since you are already experienced with driving your C/C around, and this will be the longest truck I've ever driven, are there any special concerns or driving tips you have handling yours? Does it fit in normal parking spaces, have an extremely large turn radius, makes wide turns around corners, ect? Thanks for any input you may have. After I get the Ram home, I'll be happy to meet up with you sometime if your nearby in AZ later, so you can look over your "role model". Great! Welcome to RCC and welcome home! That would be great! Say 1st question...I know you don't have it yet..but is it black or dark blue? I had assumed it was black, but in one of the ebay photos it almost looked dark blue. Driving it...it is about the longest thing on the road, outside of a super-stretch limo or truck or tractor/trailer....That long wheelbase makes for a smooth ride. Corners are no problem...you just need to remember to get a little farther into the intersection before cutting right. The turning radius is quite large---no flipping u-turns in the street without stopping, reversing, and turning some more. And your turning radius is probably a little worse than mine with your 4x4 and solid front axle. It takes about 1 and 1/3 normal parking spots if you do not want to hang out in the lane of traffic. Means I am generally hunting for two back-to-back spots--farther out in the Wal-Mart parking lot...but hey, I can use the extra exercise anyway. Angled spots are not bad--your back bumper just hangs out as far as either vehicle on both sides of you. It won't fit in most garages... Lot of fun to drive...especially with the manual. Be prepared for envious thumbs ups from other Dodge (and some brand x) owners all the way back to Yuma... Hey, thanks for the welcome, I really appreciate it. Thanks for the driving tips. That's very useful info. Yes, it is black, inside and out, except for the gray upholstery. When I go to pick it up, I will get a list of all the mods that went into converting it just so I'll know how it "ticks". So far, all I know is he streched the frame to accomodate the crew cab, converted the a/c to R-134a from the old R-12, turned up the fuel pump for more power, and modernized the interior using the front bucket seats and console from a Chrysler Minivan, which looks like it came from the factory like that, re-assigned the original front bench to become the rear bench, and all new carpeting on the floor. I can post some current interior shots if you like. As time and my budget (hopefully) will allow, I will be finishing off what he started with a few more upgrades, ie: a few more inches of lift, spray-in bedliner, windows tinted, a nice cab-high camper shell (if they make them anymore for the 1st Gens), Lund Moonvisor w/ running lights, wider rims (16X10's) w/ 35" tires, a new rear bumper (it wears a nice roll pan now, but I don't want it...anyone interested in buying it?), and an aftermarket A/V & security system with more upholstery and insulation upgrades. I think after that, it should be one sweet monster of a ride, which I'm planning on having it featured in the new "Diesel Power" magazine that started publishing recently. Wish me luck.
