i've been gone awile, bought a new house and am starting 2 businesses!! things are lookin good and i've finally found a little time to work on my junk.i was going to build a buggy but wont have the time for about a year with everything i got going on, so my buddy and i decided to do a LITTLE surgery to dodgzilla !! the cab is now solid mounted to the frame and everything below the tubes will be cut off and plated!! the rear hoop will be external and attach to the 2"x6" tube that ties the frame together, the rest of the cage will be internal!! we're going to tube out the nose and put the fenders back on!! the frame will be cut off at the 2"x6" tube and the rear will be tubed out and 3-linked!! the links will be 2" .250 DOM with 1 1/4" heims. i think i'm going to run some XJ coil springs or maybe some 2.5x18" fox air shocks not sure yet but i like the way the coil springs flex and thats what i'm after, i want the rear to go near vertical !! we should be bendin tube this weekend and i'll post a few more pics then!!

I got the cam, distributor, a set of headers (will just run them open )and getting orange box. Workin on the 44's still.. I think it will be more of a mud truck/some trails than a crawler... i just want to do anything i come across if i can hehe... Workin on a 435 4 speed too, i have spare NP203's layin around and a friend fabricates anything under the son he could build adapters so I can make a splitter setup, and I have a 15 ton military winch converted to electric also to put on there.

My uncle (previous owner of this truck) I was talkin to him today tellin him about what I'd planned to do to the motor with those mods, he thought it would be a mistake to change the cam in it... right now it has a 340 cam in it and has good low end power for a small block i've been told also that this 484 lift cam would not like the stock torque converter in the 727.. thats why i thought i could just go with the 4 speed and not worry about torque converters or trannys giving out... if this cam likes the 727 fine as it is then i won't worry about it. i'm gettin the impression this 484 cam won't have gobs of low end power and my converter won't match it, and i'll have issues gettin the power to the ground at the right times without lotsa revs... from what i've seen if this truck wants to be in the mud much, this cam would be a good thing for it, blasting high rpm is key.... but for crawlin you want lower RPM torque and low low low gears... i'm not incredibly concerned with rocks right now theres not much to crawl on around here but if you travel to an off road park they can be found. a couple of my buddies are starting to build rock rigs and i'd like to try to keep up with them yet also do good in mud as thats what most of my friends do. So what's your thoughts on this then, the cam business? If I put on 44's and a splitter transfer case I should be able to get kinda high enough RPM's to use the purple cam, but what about the torque converter? staying with the 727 a/t is fine by me less work less money less headaches less pedals and sticks to run on the trail... would this 484 lift cam have any low end power at all? i know its a pretty lumpy one with a real nice throbby lope to it Gimme your take on this stuff.... thanks Eric

IMHO,small blocks are for mild street cars boat ancors and paper weights get a big block!! but if thats not in your bugget run the the lowest gears you can get and the doubler, that will keep your S/B in its power range.big cams do nothing for a stock motor so unless your compression is 10:1 or more you will lose most if not all your low end and the only time it will run good is at high Rs which in turn will most likely destroy your stock valve train.you cant buy just one thing for an engine and expect it to perform well, all those performance parts are designed to work together.as for the tranny, run a 727 with a motor home tork converter, start in first if you hit high Rs shift to second if it starts to bog back to first......try that with a 4 speed!! next to the turbo 400 727s are the stoughtest trannys made.most 727s fail because the converter comes apart and the small peices get into the valve body or they over heat.when i was into the mud i ran a 540 horse 440 with 4:10 gears and 39.5 boggers,i burnt up 9 trannys in 5 years.the last one i ran a stock motor home converter in for two years before i sold it with out a problem.if i knew then what i know now i would have run 4:88s and a doubler!! just remember a 4 banger will turn 44s with the right gearing!!

a good friend of mine here is a big chevy guy but he's been into mud racing as long as i can recall.... he likes to take S10's and put them on 38" boggers with a built 350/350 drivetrain.... i asked him his opinion, he said if i want to keep the a/t, get a good high stall converter in it, but he said if he were me, runnin 44's with 4.10's, to go with the 4 spd. he said i would like it better and he always has sticks on everything except his racin trucks they're 350 a/t's just because of shift speed but he thought with 4.10's and 44's and a 4 spd, in low range i could take off in 2nd with that cam and probably run the whole pit in 2nd he said in mud racing it might not be as effecient or as fast as an a/t but he said overall i would be happier with the 4 spd with that engine and those gears.... because i plan on using it for occasional street driving and trail riding/rock crawling/etc..... figure i can put in a splitter/doubler/whatever too..... well right now gotta get some tires and lift it some then go from there..... Thanks for your input. I could probably pick your brain for a long time i can think of a lots of questions for you Thanks Eric

LOL yea... Well what if it had 4.88 gears would that help? Also I don't know for positive on what tires it will be running right now.... the 44's wouldn't be a bad deal but they're on 15" rim size and I'd have to find 15" 8 lug rims that would work on the front axle.... Might be cheaper/easier to find some 38's or something with a 16 or 16.5 rimsize and use rims i already have... argg... who knows. one thing at a time
