I know its probably not the best time to be planting a vegetable patch State side!, but its late summer here and my vegi patch is pumping out the goods!. I just fried up some home grown dutch cream potato's with some basil sea salt and a hint of sweet paprika, also cooked up some ''lazy house wife beans''( I didn't name them! ) out of the garden with butter and fresh basil, and topped it off with a nice King Island steak cooked on the Weber!. http://www.kingisland.org.au/Default.asp?ID=7Now I'm sipping on some Wild Turkey American honey..... ahhh life is good! So anyone here intersted in growing your own vegis?. A lazy Monday 27degrees celsius nite

The last few years I have grown a veggie garden and every year it seems like it gets a little bigger than the last.

Once we are out on the farm we plan to do a huge garden. It is right next to the main highway so we plan to have a road side stand to work also. There are a lot of people that make a living this way. They grow certain things, but buy from a wholesale distributor for the other stuff. Every year they have a tomato festival in Grainger Co. TN which is famous for tomatoes. There are dozens of vegetable sellers there selling to the tourists. Several of the large farms have booths there and are selling all kinds of produce. If you check to see where it is FROM, you will see all of it comes from a wholesaler.

As Greg said we have a garden every year and it gets bigger every year. We had some bad seeds last year and didn't get much. That's not going to happen this year.

I would probably have a veggie garden if I owned my own place. Being a renter makes it hard to have one sometimes. The place we are in now actually prohibits haveing one in the lease..

Well at least the truck garden grew well last year anyway we added a crew cab, 2 more RCs then got rid of two RCs and we added two Dusters to the patch also. I need to get together with you and find some good (vegetable) seeds this year.

There's some good seed links in Missy's original garden thread. I've got some catalogs also.

That's a good plan . I also put in 1/4 of an acre of butter nut pumpkins at work for fun, I was thinking of selling some at the gate with a ''honesty box'' and use the money for a staff party .

Heirlooms are the way to go, then you can harvest your own seed at the end of the year, keep them going without buying more. and start trading amongst locals. It's unfortunate that a lot of seed companies make the seeds unusable.

Yes it's annoying that you can't keep seeds from your crops to plant the following year.

I didn't see the melons Pete....... Item #GP-305 on the order form, Tony. Supposedly, Jenny Linds have been grown around our area since at least the 1840's. They are a bit smaller than the common honeydew varieties you find today but much sweeter.
