well here's a bit of stuff i found on the net ,,a piece from here,, and a piece from there,, i hope it helps someone,, and if it can be turned into an RCC axle guide feel free to swipe it from me and make it better,, its a quickie so here goes This is a diff cover pixc of a chrysler 7 1/4 inch rear end,, not that they were used in dodge trucks but ya may come across one in some other mopars,, its the weak one ,, it it not desireable unless you really need a ride,,lol

well they arent very good pix either but it will give you the idea of what you have , i got a bit more creative here and included a diff cover gasket pic,, it will make things a bit easier to identify,, the 8 1/4 is the next one up, used in low hp,low torque applications,, i suppose its useable but it not desireable either,, i have one in my 67 but its just there to roll it around

well im having trouble finding the 8 3/4 pix, its the one where the pumpkin comes out thru the front of the axle, as a 3rd member, theres 3 types of them and the 489 and 742 are the good ones,the 741 will get u rolling but you dont really want it for hard wheelin, see this link for more info on them, http://ramchargercentral.com/boards/index.php?board=104;action=display;threadid=14978, there are no pix there but if you have an 8 3/4, you know it, and you prolly dont wanna give it to me,,lol, I could insert a pic of mine, but that wont help much,, so we will continue on with the pic of the most popular axle ever installed by the factory in a ramcharger and other 1/2 ton dodge trucks ,, the 9 1/4 inch

then we move up to the big dogs,, these are what the 3/4 and one tons will have most of the time,, couldn't find and diff gasket pix but they look alot alike so here is the dana 60 (left) and the dana 70(right) these are the ones everyone wants, and are also  75% of the time, priced too dam high for the commoner to own unless u get a deal or they dont know what they are selling ya

and the most popular front axle ever put into a dodge 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton ever,,, the dana 44 , it came in several versions including full time with out hubs,, and the central axle dissconnect,,versions,, but the cover and basic id is what im going for here so heres what it looks like

i posted this before and i have seen it elsewhere before as well but the dana family of axles are all very similar looking in shape,, the difference is size and strength but if ya cant tell by looking, try comparing your find to this chart to see what you have,, i hope some of this helps and like i said,, if anyone wants to elaborate or rebuild this little thread , better, stronger and faster that it was before,, well get after it,,dont even ask me,although i would like to see any additions so ya could let me know when its done,,lol, just make it as informative as possible for anyone looking for axle info

I almost forgot about this thread, even though i didnt originally intend it, im hoping to see it as a permanent part of the site, Also heres a pic of the 8 3/4 ,489 "removed" center section, for more in depth info concerning the 8 3/4 you will have to consult the 8 3/4 axle guide, i believe it doesent contain pix so these will help some

What axles are in my truck / it's a good question and often asked on here
1/2 ton pick-up trucks, Ramcharger, and Traildusters
From 1972 to 1976 in trucks and some RC,s and TD,s the rear axle would be a Chrysler 8 3/4 with a Dana 44 front.
From 1974 to 1993 in RC,s and TD,s (they stopped TD production in 81) the rear axle would be a Chrysler 9 1/4 with a Dana 44 front.
NOTE # 1 / 1974 to 79 RC,s and TD,s had the front full-time Dana 44 front / 1972 to 1974 1/2 ton trucks had the Dana 44 front part-time with drums / 1974 to 79 1/2 ton trucks use a full-time Dana 44 front axle with disc brakes.
NOTE # 2 / the 1980 to 1985 trucks and RC,s had the part-time Dana 44 front (with either manual or auto hubs) and the Chrysler 9 1/4 rear axle / also 1985 was the year that they just started the CAD front axle that ran until 1993 / so most 85,s had the CAD but some do not.
3/4 ton Standard Duty
1972 to 1975 would have a Dana 60 rear axle and Dana 44 HD front axle with part-time and drums. 1975 to 1979 would have a Dana 60 rear axle and Dana 44 HD front axle with full-time and disc brakes. 1980 to 1985 would have a Dana 60 or the very rare Chrysler 9 1/4 HD 8-lug rear axle and a Dana 44 HD frontend with manual or auto hubs. 1985 to 1993 would have a Dana 60 or the very rare Chrysler 9 1/4 HD 8-lug rear axle and a Dana 44 HD frontend with CAD.
3/4 ton Heavy Duty
1972 to 1974 would have a Dana 60 or 70 rear axle and a Dana 70 front axle. 1975 to 1993 would have a Dana 60 or 70 rear axle and a Dana 60 front axle.
1 ton Single Rear Wheel
1972 to 1974 would have a Dana 60 or 70 rear axle and a Dana 70 front axle. 1975 to 1979 would have a Dana 60 or 70 rear axle and a Dana 60 front axle. 1980 to 1993 would have a Dana 60 or 70 rear axle and a Dana 44 HD or 60 front axle depending on GVW.
1 ton Dual Rear Wheel
1972 to 1974 would have a Dana 60 or 70 rear axle and a Dana 70 front axle. 1975 to 1993 would have a Dana 60 or 70 rear axle and a Dana 60 front axle.
