Title: Preserving your Automatic Transmission

Weak Link: The weak link is usually the overdrive unit in the transmission. However every transmission is different, therefore other internal parts could also cause problems.

Models Affected:’94-’01 Dodge Rams

What happens: Slipping, loss of reverse, loss of forward gear(s) burnt & brownish-colored transmission fluid. Defective torque converters..(in my case a cracked servo ruined my 46RE)

Strong Fix: The strongest fix is a total rebuild. A few things you can do to help your transmission last is to change the fluid & filter every 30,000 miles, and turn your Overdrive OFF when towing. After a rebuild, clean out the transmission cooler lines with compressed air. The factory transmission cooler should be replaced with an aftermarket unit to prevent contaminated fluid from re-entering your new transmission.
