« on: April 14, 2009, 02:19:53 PM »
new project under way. 1988 ramcharger w350

1994 p pumped cummins, 5 speed getrag, 205 case, king ping 60 front, dana 70 rear. 17/40/16.5 ground hawgs.

it will be treated to custom bumpers, sliders, skid plate, roof rack with a light bar, and who knows what else

the ramcharger in its previous life of a nasty small block and 33's and the new cummins heart

Did you keep AC as well? Or just using the pump as another idler?

the ac is staying on there. it gets hot in florida in the summer, and what better way to beat the heat than to be wheeling, windows up, ac blowing

How hard was it to mate the 2 differing systems?

I have no intention of transplanting my p-pump motor into anything else, but figure the small details would be valued by many.

Are you using a PCM to control anything like cruise/grid heater/alternator? Or did you bypass pcm alternator control for the favored external regulator?

What will you be doing with the diesel auto tranny? (I need one, 94/95 specific ;))

how did you mount intercooler?

What radiator did you use?

im am pretty much re wiring the truck from scratch (again . . . ) so there will be no computer, about the smartest thing in the truck will be the radio.

the ac shouldnt be to bad, im having a local shop make new lines but all the fittings are the same between the two trucks.

the intercooler, im going one of two ways with it, i have the stock set up from a 1993 which will all bolt up, just have to plumb it all.
option number two being use the radiator and intercooler from the 1994. im leaning this way due to the much greater size of the units. going this rout the front of the truck is getting "skinned" there will be a tube frame. the fender skins, grill and hood will all mount to this. then the radiator and intercooler as well as the condenser core will be on there own structure behind it all.

as far as the auto tranny, it is for sale, i have a few local people interested in it. i does need a rebuild. the truck was still moving under its own power before i pulled it apart. with the tranny out, i pulled the pan and found black fluid and a few alarmingly big pieces of steel and frictions in the pan.

The fittings aren't the same between the trucks...not quite. The 94 uses quick disconnects as you already know. It also uses a FOT metering device, where the old truck uses a TXV metering device (completely different plumbing schematics, one uses receiver/dryer, other uses accumulator) Not that it is hard, just letting you know. The old style is better, so that is the one to replicate, not the '94 style. TXV tend to get colder than FOT.

As for the intercooler, 88 core support doesn't bolt up to intercooler, the old diesels had a different core support. Some people report newer 94-up intercoolers being too big to fit.

So since it would require extensive cutting, I'd vote for plan B. Use much bigger cooling system from 94 (36" radiator). The 94-02 trucks have a "tube frame" core support anyways, so it might be just as easy to adapt the entire tube core support assembly...

{noclue} oh well, I just need the case and core converter, not expecting a pristine tranny. Any other serviceable internals are just added bonus. If we can figure out how to move it from FL to TX, I'm still interested.

Avoid replacing any part that you have not proven to be faulty through extensive testing.

the other is from the other donner truck, which was a 1993 w 350. from the 1993 im using the axles, tranny and transfer case.

your gona hate me im trying to get another motor and tranny from my neighbor and then another whole 1990 2 wheel drive truck

oh and the frame is mostly stock. i did plate the inside of the frame on the back of the cross member. it will be getting some serious work for the suspension though. pretty much all the stock stuff is coming off. its staying with leafs for now. there will be all new hangers, and flipped rear shackles. plus probably some more plating in the front.

as far as motor mounts, they are the factory 1993 mounts on the 1994 motor and factor mounts on the truck

rears is a dana 70.

and i think im going to switch it to disc brake rear like im doing on my other truck. stops better, wears better, and you can actually do it for the same or a little cheaper than to buy new drums shoes hardware and wheel cylinders

MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION ARE IN THE TRUCK!!

transfer case is together and waiting to go on tranny.

there has been one hang up, that would be the cross member. i knew i would have a few issues with it. but it turned out that 2 of the bolt holes on either side lined up, so i only have to drill 4 new holes. the top ones will be interesting, since there is frame below them and body above them.

and with all that new weight it only sits about 3/4 of an inch lower with the 4 inch rough country spring that are in it.

the "new" turbo

its an hx35 off of a 2001. it should spool a little better, but the real reason for it is that i split the shaft on the original turbo. water is bad . . .

old turbo on the right, new on the left

heavy heavy heavy tranny, not fun to put in the parts washer

adapter plate from the 1993 motor to run the 5 speed, and come to find out i have to run the starter off the 5 speed. one bolt hole is just a little off, and i really hope i never have to change it in the truck. the crank case vent is right in the way of ever getting to it. that might have to change

it was kinda a slow week, i didnt get much done on the ramcharger.
i had to fix a pesky problem on a jeep cherokee. i was test driving it after doing some cooling system work, when the track bar decided to just kinda fall off . . . .

hopefully there will be some progress this weekend. im hoping to have the front end in and drive shaft. and get my rear measured up and start on getting that done.

i honestly have no idea as to how much lift the front spring are

when we got our jeep they came with it. the guy we got it from was going to put them under it. they would have never fit. but with 4 inches of drop bracket in the front and 38's the front of the frame rail is at i think 40 inches off the ground.
the bottom of the windows are above my head, and im 6' 1" . . .

so im in maine for the week but befor i went, i got my new u bolts bent.  i have to go get one redone, the bent it about an inch to wide. theres $25 down the drain, no returns or refunds.
i also picked up a pile of tractor links to make my tranction bars, and what will be hopfully an indestrutible tie rod. 2 inch o.d.  DOM tubing with 3/4 or 1 inch rod ends, i dont remeber how big they are. i think im going to make a drag link the same way too.\

there might be a new project on the way . . .
 ex airforce 4 door truck with a 440 727 and a 205.  there is a cummins sitting in the shop still . . .

so I'm in Maine for the week.
 i wish i had my truck and a trailer, a big trailer . . .

in a 20 to 30 minute drive from my grandparents house, there are no less than ten 3/4 and 1 ton 4x4's, two were even cummins, dodges just sitting in the bushes next to people houses. there are a few for sale too.

i have scene a deuce and a 5 ton just sitting
 two m37's
 an m715
 couple ramchargers
and i got passed by the elusive long bed step side. how many of you have scene one of those?
and yes they were factory in the 70's from dodge
