Anyone tangled with these old 3rd member beasts?
They are found in 1947(ish) to 1972(ish) GM 3/4 and 1 tons.

Commonly came with stock Detroit style lockers and 3.90,4.10,4.56 and 5.13 gears. They are full float, 10.125 ring, 17 spline axle. However a modern 14 bolt Detroit will fit in the carrier and allow you to run 30 spline 14 bolt shafts.1350 is stock yoke but 1410 yokes are available. http://www.northerndrivetrain.com/category/app_axles_eaton_h072.html 

With disc brakes these axles weigh- 360 lbs.

WMS measurements are sketchy at best. '59 and older are all 63" WMS, be it SRW or DRW. Post 59 are 65"
Axles under vans are said to be 70" wide.

They are an all metal housing, no cast. So they're really easy to truss,weld link brackets, ect. Also can be shaved and have the clearance as good if not better than a dana 44.

Much like a 14 bolt they have a pinion support bearing.
The 72s had load bolts to keep the ring gear in check under severe loads, this is also an easy way to tell a 52 from a 72.

Disc brake setup is easy because a 14 bolt conversion bracket will fit the spindle.

From what I can tell most people don't know what they are and sell them for dirt cheap. Guys are running them hard with 40" plus tires without carnage. An axle that can be had for less than $100 with low gears and a locker that can handle 40inch tires is a damn good deal and you should keep your eyes open.

Earlier diffs had ball bearings while the later had more modern conical roller bearings.

Generally find the axle ratio stamped here but not always. If  the ratio is accompanied by the letter "G" it has a locker

Years ago there was a local 71 or 72 GMC 3/4 ton that had that rear. Looked huge, much bigger than the front.

My dads buddy has a 58 i believe chevy apache 4spd i6 2wd and its got one of these rear axles. They're brutes.

Front and rear? this guy isn't fooling around. Makes parts redundancy easy.

Many years ago, one of my friend's bought a W150 that someone had swapped an Eaton into. For a 40+ yr old axle, they could hold their own. But having been out of production for over 4 decades, and limited aftermarket support, I wouldn't go out of my way to find them and use them, when Dana axles are plentiful and well supported.
