I just bought a set of Chrome 17" rims off of a 2002 Ram for my 1983 Ram, same bolt pattern! Then I ran into a problem...the center hole on the 83 rims is 3 1/2", the center hole on the 17" rims is 3"! DAMNIT!!!! Does anybody know of a wheel shop that will open up the center of these rims and get them to fit? Anyone else have chromers with tires they are willing to swap?

BUMMER. I would think any machine shop would be able to do it. Honestly if you had the tools you could do it yourself, Ive had several sets of used wheels that people had "opened up". Good luck

Yeah, I think I will just buy a hole saw and go for it! I figure if I open them up just a little more than needed, I will have room for adjustment! (and incase I dont get the hole exactly centered) Well, I guess this is my project next week!

I think a hole saw would be way too difficult unless you put them into a drill press and cand hold them tight(I cant remember if you said how much you had to take off.) Im not the first person I WOULD ask but if it WERE ME, Id measure and tape off where thay need to be trimmed to and use a hand grinder and flapper wheel..providing there is enough room. Again Im just drinkin beer thinking out loud! Grin

Yeah, I need to take off a total of 1/2", (1/4" all the way around) I am going to call my brother, and see if his plasma cutter is up and running, and hopefully that is a route I can go! It doesnt really matter what the holes look like, as I have the center caps as well, and they will cover whatever mess I create! Not going for a show truck, but i got all 4 wheels, and new tires for $150, so no big loss!

Well, using the old brake drum as a template, we used the plasma to open them up, and then a grinder to do some final cleaning. They dont look factory, but I have the outer covers, so no big deal, and the rims make this truck! I will post pics once I get them on the truck, I have one on now, but with the rain and work, havent had time to do much! The 4th rim looks better than the 1st, but I guess that comes with practice hu?

How is the backspacing? I was under the impression they would tuck in too far?

I just read about guys using a household wood router to open up the centers, said the straight carbide bits went through aluminum smoothly like butter.

Well, got her done, and it looks pretty good! Used the hole saw to open up the center caps so they would fit over the 4X4 hubs, and the plasma to open up the rims. If you are doing this on a 2 wheel drive, opening thecenters is not required. I did have to buy spacers from summit, but that ran about $37. BTW, the truck is for sale $1200.
